An Amazing Story of a Holocaust Survivor,
By Emily (NH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Promised I Would Tell (Paperback)
This incredible and devestating tale of Sonia Weitz and her family depicted the horror of the Holocaust and what it was really like for the Jewish population in Europe. I thought this book was very well written and the poetry all brought insight to what was happening back then.

Moving story,

I bought this for my daughter to read this summer and read it myself first. What an incredibly moving story! Beautiful poetry, vivid descriptions of the sadness and horror that she went through, yet extremely moving and inspiring. A very quick book to read as well.

A MUST READ,
By CHARLES E. BUTTS (IRVING, TEXAS United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Promised I Would Tell (Paperback)
THERE IS ONLY A RELATIVE HANDFUL OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS STILL ALIVE, AND I WISH THEY WOULD RECORD THEIR STORY AS SONIA WEITZ DID, AS A WAY OF MAKING SURE THE HOLOCAUST IS NOT FORGOTTEN. IT ALSO DETAILS HOW A PERSON CAN LIVE THROUGH THE MOST INHUMANE INCIDENT IN RECORDED HISTORY, AND GROW OUT OF IT WITH A SENSE OF DETERMINATION, WARMTH AND LOVE. IT SHOULD BE ON THE SHELVES OF EVERY PUBLIC AND SCHOOL LIBRARY IN THE NATION.

From a Teacher's Perspective,

This review is from: I Promised I Would Tell (Paperback)
I just read this memoir with my 8th grade students. I used some of the curriculum ideas that come from Facing History and Ourselves, publishers of the book. In all students found it compelling, yet the poetry, photographs and quick narration (9 chapters in total) made it more digestible for the students. They'd previously read Night, by Elie Wiesel (with another teacher), and found his descriptions to be very detailed (powerful but too graphic for them). Sonia's memoir was a combination of the personal, and historicaly yet she is sparse in her narration. She provides more of a sketch of what happened. I recommend the book to other teachers.

Somewhat sparse but enjoyable,

As far as Holocaust stories go, Sonia's is fairly short and interspersed with poetry rather than presenting the full facts and memories. The book is more appropriate for a younger audience, though mature readers may appreciate the simply-worded poetry as well. I had the privilege of meeting Sonia in 2001 through a small inter-faith dialogue group and enjoyed hearing her story in her own words.

It was ok, but kinda boring. I thought it was also pretty good cuz it was emotional and helped understand the Holocaust.
