Biography

Is it possible to be a successful purveyor of country music and Americana and still be a long-haired, pot smoking, environmentalist, liberal hippie? Willie Nelson is and always has been. His perpetually unshaven beard, long hair - frequently braided Indian style - American flag head scarf or cowboy hat and red, white and blue guitar straps are as visually recognisable as his deep, raw, warbley… Read more in Amazon's Willie Nelson Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Country Willie Unplugged!, May 9, 2007
This review is from: The I.R.S. Tapes - Who'll Buy My Memories (Audio CD)
As you can guess by this album's title, this 2-disc set was recorded to aid in the relief of Willie Nelson's tax problems. But instead of merely compiling older tracks or demos, Willie entered the studio to record two dozen fresh solo interpretations of some of his more interesting early compositions.

With his guitar and voice demonstrating equal drama and emotion, he brings back a few obscurities, many genuinely hearbreaking tunes (he no doubt wanted no-one at the I.R.S. to crack anything resembling a grin), and a few tunes made famous by other performers. Thoughout the whole of the program, his performances are intimate and intriguing -- the listener feels as though they are in Nelson's tour bus or living room, sharing a true moment.

Rather smartly, this set was initially marketed only through direct marketing. Unfortunately, it remains out of print, deserving a kinder fate. Here's your chance to hear music as its creator intended: raw, often painful, sometimes goofy, and leaving you wanting more.
