"Great stories from the great Carl Reiner. I liked Chapter 29 the best." --Albert Brooks

"At a time when so much of comedy can be cruel and mean spirited... Carl Reiner is a perfect example of comedy and kindness mixed with just the right amount of biting wit to make for a really satisfying read." --Jay Leno

Carl Reiner is a comedy genius and a national treasure, that is so known and not even worth discussing here. Of course this book contains brilliant stories, both hilarious and deeply touching. But plenty of people have talked about that when reviewing Carl Reiner's books, every one of which I have devoured and adored.

But that's not why you need to get this book. Though Carl Reiner is, get this, 90 years old, he has managed to conquer yet another medium:

E-books.

This brilliant writer, actor, director, producer and oddly compelling dancer has created an e-book where one minute you are hearing him tell a story about the days of hosting game shows where people smoked like the maddest of Mad Men throughout the broadcast, and then, right there on the page, is a video of one of the oddest game shows I've ever seen. On another page he talks about Mel Brooks, and right there, right next to his words, is a video of Mel Brooks cavorting in a swim suit on Fire Island. And you know what, he looks...surprisingly good!*

*This is the review blurb that Mel gave for Carl's wonderful collection of short stories, so it's not that mean for me to use it to review his swimsuit modeling. It's, well...surprisingly kind.

The whole book is like that. There are dear home movies of his kids and dog, you can hear his beloved and brilliantly talented cabaret singing wife Estelle in a recording made in HER 90's, the whole thing makes you wish that Carl were your Uncle, and these were your family stories you were hearing. This book will help you pretend that something that wonderful has happened to you. I laughed out loud so hard it woke my husband from a dead sleep, and I sobbed when I read of how much he loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren.

Please, please, please get and read and watch and listen to this amazing book and then tell everyone you know to read it. It's a treasure. Just like Carl.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

I saw Mr. Reiner promoting this book on The Tonight Show and was going to pre-order it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it's already available for the Kindle. At this point, I'm only about 1/3 through the book but I thought I'd write a few lines if it will help generate sales and make others realize it's available. And I'm obviously not being paid to do this or I never would've written that last sentence!

THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW is my all-time favorite show. And I once got to hear Mr. Reiner speak at a WGA seminar. He walked right past me but I was too in awe to say anything to him.

Anyway, I loved MY ANECDOTAL LIFE. I REMEMBER ME is more anecdotal than a true biography--which suits this reader just fine. Anyone would be privileged to be able to hang out with Mr. Reiner for an afternoon, listening to him tell stories. Both books offer that opportunity.

It's a light read from a very warm heart.

I love Carl Reiner's work. Over a three-week period, I read this book and his previous memoir, "My Anecdotal Life." The material in both is wonderful, does not repeat too much, and takes us back to key developmental points in both Mr. Reiner's life and the life of TV and film (though, surprisingly, not that much about film).

One thing kept popping up over and over. I know it's nit-picky, but if this book had an editor, you wouldn't know it. From my own writing, and I'm a professional writer and editor, I have learned one thing. The final edit should never be your own. You should always hire someone to properly cull the book, not only for errant words and odd punctuation, but for missing thoughts and sections (the continuity of words, sentences, paragraphs). I promise you, if you do not have it professionally edited, you as both writer and editor will miss stuff over and over. Sometimes, you will miss it for years.

I suspect Carl, or perhaps a friend, was the editor. I don't know this, of course, but this book is a mess. Here is an example. Page 98 ends like this: "Miraculously, deep in the hills of the Adirondacks, while looking for a neat patch of lawn to". The thought, however, does not continue onto page 99. The rest of the sentence, the paragraph, and the thought are simply not there. Instead, 99 contains a photo and begins with a new paragraph. I'll bet the missing section got deleted when the picture was inserted. The same happens between page 101 and 102. A thought is being expressed in the sentence. Then, the reader turns the page and discovers a completely different thought. The sentence does not continue.

It looks like cut-and-paste trouble to me. Been there, done that.

This is what will happen to you as you read his memoir. First you read the foreword from Billy Crystal and realize that you have just been invited into the wonderful world of Carl Reiner. It will feel like Carl opens his front door (which I have had the pleasure of walking through many times) he will sit you down and begin to tell you stories of his life. He is 90 and as you read... you will discover secrets to life that you will magically apply to your own. I met some very powerful people in hollywood who wanted to meet me before I started working with Carl. One statement echoes in my mind in that meeting "When you start working with Carl it will be life changing"... Gentle readers I warn you when you read "I Remember Me" it will change your life... and I know mine has... Thank you Carl Reiner
all the best
