5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid, June 18, 2008
This review is from: I Remember Russ (Audio CD)
This was Jerry Vale's second album, recorded in 1958 as a sequel to his Buddy Clark tribute. If you are only familiar with Vale's voice from the '70's on, you will be surprised at the open, full, and unmannered sound he had at the beginning of his career. His technique, as always, was stunning. The arrangements on this CD are by Glenn Osser, who partnered Vale through one of the best phases of his career, the late '50's through the early '60's. Vale has called him "a master," and indeed the orchestra is simply lovely throughout. As for the repertoire, these are mainly sentimental love songs done with restraint and without any cloying theatrics. To my great surprise, none of these selections, nor the numbers on the earlier Buddy Clark CD, showed up on Jerry Vale's Greatest Hits. So you can buy all three CDs without any duplications. I think they are essential selections in the history of American popular singing. Jerry Vale at the start of his career was an amazing singer, with style and chops that hardly anyone has matched.

5.0 out of 5 stars the great russ columbo, September 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: I Remember Russ (Audio CD)
russ columbo was considered the first and finest croner of his time-the 30 and 40s---many considered him better croner then bing crosby-jerry vale revives his memory but falls short in style and voice and croning delivery- not his fault russ columbo was the best but imitation is flatery--give gerry A for effort and A for remembering russ and reminding us that you cant imitate the best-sometimes it doent come off---i would have preferred a release of a russ colombo album
