Book Description

1555705103 978-1555705107 January 1, 2005
Boost students’ achievement and test scores in science, social studies, and more with the latest I-Search title for educators working in grades K-8. This new companion guide builds on I-Search, You Search, We All Learn to Research by focusing on content areas. Through 20 lessons you will learn how to teach students to develop research questions, locate information, record information and findings, interpret their research, summarize and develop major points, list sources, write and present their reports, and more. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking standards are incorporated into every lesson to help prepare students for success on exams. Duncan and Lockhart show how to assess student performance, instructional methods, and become more proficient in designing and delivering lessons. Also included is a Collaborative Planning Guide for teachers and librarians, a student research journal for use in the classroom, a sample standards-based I-search unit, and a PowerPoint presentation for collaborating with faculty and administrators. The lessons, student journal, and PowerPoint presentation are reproduced on the CD-ROM for easy customization. Here’s everything you need to integrate the I-Search into important content areas and show how it boosts standardized tests and authentic assessments.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

School librarians who have not yet utilized I-Search strategies for research will probably become happy advocates after reading this easy-to-implement manual. As the subtitle intimates, the book is all about connections. The foreword sets out a concise historical progression of information literacy as it has evolved from the '70s. Part I of this hefty helper provides useful ways of connecting lessons to standards using planning formats that illuminate and clarify, and provides clear, usable strategies for collaborating with teachers, administrators, and purse-string holders. Part II is an elegantly simple, in-depth users guide for each step of the five I-Search steps, replete with templates to copy from the book (or from the included CD-ROM) of planning materials, time lines, rubrics, worksheets, and more. The last section contains 90 pages of wonderful templates that can be used for almost any project or collaboration imaginable. Readers will find all the research justifications (10 pages of references) and models a beginning or veteran school librarian would need to comfortably navigate the research world, all clearly explained, illustrated, and modeled in templates and forms to use and adapt. There are endless possibilities for using the 20 lessons provided in addition to the models and templates for basic research, as well as expanded and technology-adapted projects.–Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA

From Booklist

Extending the authors' previous book, I-Search, You Search, We All Learn to Research (Neal-Schuman, 2000), this title takes readers step-by-step through a unit for grades three and four, from planning to assessment. The chapter on assessment includes rubrics, student self-assessments, and unit evaluation. Sample unit lessons are aligned to McREL curriculum standards and Information Power Information Literacy Standards (AASL/AECT, 1998). Large boxed figures interspersed throughout the text include I-Search forms, worksheets, organizational tools, and lists of resources for further information. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the collaborative planning guide, the I-Search journal for students, and a PowerPoint presentation for professional development found in the book, with all of the figures incorporated for easy modification and printing. This is a valuable resource guide for teachers and librarians using, or planning to use, the I-Search method. Rochelle Glantz
