In a tiny boat adrift in swirling waves, a frightened, lonely little girl with an angelically sweet face wonders whether anyone knows she is all alone at sea. But as she views images that speak of the presence of God--the loving face of the full moon, the stars, the dove that flies toward the shore--she is comforted. The illustrations are somber but appropriately peaceful, their subdued hues creating a sleepy-time setting for the text. Jenkins' use of delicate gold leaf to outline the stars, waves, and wind lends a rich luminosity to the paintings that aptly conveys the wonder a child might feel in the presence of the mystery of God. About the Author
Kathi Appelt first became interested in traditional songs such as “I See the Moon” as a child in Houston, Texas, where her grandmother sang them to her. Kathi is the author of over thirty books for children and young adults, including The Underneath, a 2009 Newbery Honor Book and a National Book Award finalist, and Elephants Aloft, an IRA Teacher’s Choice. Kathi lives in Texas.
Debra Reid Jenkins used jewel-like color and gold leaf to help communicate the mystery of the presence of God, and to show how that presence might appear in a child’s imagination. Debra is also the illustrator of I Wanted to Know All about God, by Virginia Kroll, Glory, by Nancy White Carlstrom, and My Freedom Trip, by Frances and Ginger Park. Debra lives in Michigan.

BEAUTIFUL!,

Not only does this story have a wonderful message that God is always nearby, the illustrations are absolutely captivating! My son just loves the pictures in this book, and you know what? So do I!!! I think this book is worth the purchase just for the beautiful illustrations which make this old favorite come alive!

This book has a great message that young children can easily understand. The illistrator did a wonderful job! The entire book is just beautiful. Our two year old follows the little girl from sitting up in bed at the start of the book to laying down at the end. The flow of words is soothing and is easy for our daughter to memorize as well. This book is always in the "must read" pile at bedtime and is cherished by everyone in the family.

One of our all-time favorite books!,

We received this book from a friend when we were expecting our first baby, and now, six years and three children later, it is still one of the most prized books in our family library. The rhyme beautifully expresses a child's faith in God, and the illustrations are gorgeous. A must-have book!
