Mac Davis is wonderful--but where are the other hit songs?, April 23, 2010
This review is from: I Sing the Hits (Audio CD)
This is not my favorite Mac Davis album; but he is in excellent form here as usual. Unfortunately, the album is missing quite a few hits including, for example, "It's Hard to be Humble" and "Texas in My Rear View Mirror." That's a disappointment!
The songs that we do get, however, are all wonderful. The album begins with Mac's classic hit "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" and he never skips a beat! His sophisticated phrasing and excellent diction enhance his performance all the more. The music that plays fits in perfectly with Mac's vocals, too. Great! "Burnin' Thing" has a strong musical arrangement to accompany Mac as he sings; he gives this song a most passionate delivery and it all holds its own very well. In addition, "I Believe in Music" is also very impressive; the piano adds to the arrangement and Mac performs this like the pro he is and always will be!
"One Hell of a Woman" has a great melody that stays in my mind long after I hear Mac sing it; he handles complex tempo and key changes faultlessly. "Honeysuckle Magic" is very well done; and "Soft, Sweet Fire" is very memorable. "Soft, Sweet Fire" uses a fine technique to make it sound as if there are two Mac's singing; and it works wonders for this ballad.
"Stop and Smell the Roses" is a big Mac Davis hit; and just one listen will tell you why! There's a great backup chorus but Mac didn't really need it. "Watching Scotty Grow" has a terrific country flavor to it that I enjoy immensely; and "Picking up the Pieces of My Life" is another passionate ballad that gets the royal treatment from Mac. The CD ends with Mac Davis performing his own "In the Ghetto;" and Mac never sounded better!
Mac Davis gave us so much; and I hope he'll share his talent with us for many years to come. Although his fans will appreciate the music on this album, there are simply not enough hits on this CD to truly warrant a title of "I Sing the Hits." It's a great Mac Davis album; but it's also far from being a definitive hits collection.
