Cute science book; otherwise disappointing,

This review is from: I Spy in the Ocean (Board book)
I ordered this with along with I Spy in the Jungle, thinking they were similar to the scholastic "I Spy" series (where children practice visual discrimination and memory by hunting for objects) with an ocean/jungle theme and including letter sound practice. The text on each page reads,"I spy with my little eye something beginning with the letter..." The problem is that the object in question does not appear in the accompanying ocean/jungle picture. The object is on the next page, not hidden at all. There is a cutout hole on each page for the first letter which is cute, but doesn't enhance the I Spy theme. Also, the letter sound practice can be confusing because it uses "eels" for e and "angelfish" for a, which are the long sounds. Young children usually learn the short sound first such as a for apple. There is a list of ocean/jungle animal facts at the end of each. The books would be nice for a vocabulary study of the habitats and a little phonics, but that's about it.

My 3 year old grandchild loves this book and the "I spy in the Jungle." She has learned to "read both books" and we have spent countless hours enjoying them. We are waiting for another in this series! An excellent choice!

My three-year-old really likes this book. He can remember "A" is for - Angelfish "O" is for Octopus... and so on. Personally I think it was a nice try but came up a little short. The pictures are nice (other than the menacing looking eels but they don't seem to bother my son) but "N" for Nurse Shark???? What was wrong with "S" for Shark? The cut-out porthole windows views to the next page are nice and we read this one a lot..... that nurse shark thing just bugs me.

Not in the same league as earlier books in the series...,

Very few objects to engage kids. I consider myself well informed on marine life but had never heard of a Nurse Shark! And how will kids relate with that!

Are you kidding me? Sharks, crabs, eels. This is a children's book. Look at the eels...they look like they're out for blood. Think about your audience prior to drawing these very scary pix!
