Modern western swing with a wink and a smile,

This review is from: I Still Get Dressed on Sundays (Audio CD)
An amiable set of western swing oldies and fine new originals, written by one of the founding members of the retro-jazz vocals ensemble, Manhattan Transfer. (No -- I'm not kidding!) Pistilli, who's nicknamed himself "The Hoboken Saddletramp," has a real feel for the music, which isn't too surprising -- he's moving from one style of retro swing to another -- and has written several swell new tunes (the title track in particular). There's a certain reserve to this album that makes it less than overpowering, but it's still pretty nice -- fans of The Hot Club Of Cowtown will wanna check this out as well.

Gene Pistilli comes from Hoboken NJ, a community that boasts Frank Sinatra among its native sons. Music has always been a passion in the Pistilli family, and Gene had a lot of exposure to swing while he was growing up.
He became one of the founding members of the Manhattan Transfer until he moved to California and became a successful songwriter. Now Pistilli is a resident of Nashville. With "I Still Get Dressed on Sundays" he has produced a fabulous, fun album of Western Swing music - emphasis on SWING. Reflective of his musical style, his chosen nickname, The Hoboken Saddletramp, is more subtle and even funnier than his original idea - Hank Sinatra, Jr. It's obvious he has a lot of respect and affection for the material here. Some songs are classics, others are new, but all of them have an infectious joy. It's impossible not to dance, sing, or at least tap your toes when listening to "I Still Get Dressed on Sundays." Highly recommended!
