This review is from: I Still Miss Someone (MP3 Download)
When I was around 19 years old, country music was making a HUGE impact on the listening public. i.e.,Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and all those outlaws who were not male model pretty and looked good in a cowboy hat. These people wrote their own material, played their own instruments, slept in cars, and played honky tonks 300 days a year. They were not"products" of a giant record label.Earl Scruggs had been one of these long tourers way before the red headed pigtail was able to buy his own golf course.
I HATED every country song ever written, All my friends jumped on the country band wagon. I did not. Rock and Roll forever! Then I had a country awakening. I heard the song "I Still Miss Someone", with Johnny Cash singing and Mr. Scruggs backing up on banjo. I LOVED it. It did not matter that it was called a "country" song. This was just a perfect song. Being a musician myself, I had to play it. It's very easy but such a pleasure to play. I started to listen to country music and forget about the shiny suits, crew cuts. pompadours, etc... I listened to the bands, their licks. types of instruments, production, and avoided the stupid pictures on the album sleeves.Boy was I stupid. These are some of the best writers, singers, and pickers any where. The Essential Earl Scruggs is a great album, but it's not for everyone. You have to like Earl. But, if you listen to "I Still Miss Someone," you'll love it, |
