Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With their soft airs and pretty colors, the pictures in Isadora's new book are ideal means for bringing parents and tiny chidlren close as they investigate events in the story together. The prize-winning illustrator (Ben's Trumpet, Opening Night) stars a huggable toddler who tells about what she touches and doesn't touch ("not the cup; it's hot.") and how they feel. The family cat and teddy bear are downy; dad's beard is scratchy; leaves crunch; the garden statue is hard; a lollipop is sticky, etc. A most engaging introduction to books also serves as a lesson in naming things.

From School Library Journal

PreS A companion book to I See and I Hear (both Greenwillow, l985), its stated aim is to show pictures that a baby can recognize, simple words that a baby can repeat and objects that a baby can name. It has well-spaced large type set against large white areas. The illustrations are fuzzy-edged, muted watercolors. They show a toddler with her teddy bear, cat, lollipop, bubbles, etc. Isadora uses many tactile examples, such as : "I touch my cereal. It's gooey. . . . I touch the sand. It's rough." But other examples seem more aimed at experiences: "I touch Mommy. She laughs." These two overlapping concepts are confusing. The pictures are uneven in quality. They look like pale imitations of Eloise Wilkins' Golden Book moppets. Isadora's unsure grasp of anatomy, even when bodies are hidden by voluminous coveralls, creates some decidedly awkward pictures. Those looking for a tactile concept book would be better served by Tana Hoban's Is It Rough? Is It Smooth? Is It Shiny? (Greenwillow, 1984) or that old stand-by, Pat the Bunny (Golden, 1942) by Kunhardt. Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library

This review is from: I Touch (Board book)
I know, I know... when it comes to board books, you wonder if your money would be better spent on teething toys sometimes. Our family has chosen to invest in a vast array of board books for our child because we believe that the benefits of reading to her outweigh the financial output. We also BUY the board books, rather than borrow them from the library or buy them used because young children DO tend to orally discover their world. Our daughter has chewed and thrown some of her books, BUT NOT THIS ONE! She treasures this book, it is one of her favorites. I have seen her hug it, even kiss it! I think she likes it because she can actually understand the words that go to the pictures. The illustrations are of a soft impressionistic style and are married well to the repetitive, rhythmic text. This book always seems to give her a focused calm, and has been a great tool to me in distracting her out of rascally or tantrum-y moods. Get it... you'll be glad you did!
