5.0 out of 5 stars More than a simple Rose, March 18, 2001
This review is from: I Wanna Be Loved by You (Audio CD)
Rose Murphy was the queen of the jump. It's a pity that her name is not included in popular jazz encyclopaedias. She sang with a unique and original style. Her delicious baby-voice and her piano full of swing made her records sounds like a sort of "dadaism" in jazz. She was in good company: some of the greatest jazz inventors (Satchmo, Fats Waller, Dizzy Gillespie) put humour in their shows and records. Listen to her performance of "I wanna be loved by you" and you will discover her influence in sexy singing style on the same song with Marilyn Monroe. Listen also to "I can't give you anything but love" and you will remember Ella Fitzgerald's imitation of her. But don't miss the album and enjoy her delicious rendition to "Best things in life are free". A Rose is a rose is rose is a rose. More than only a rose: a mighty Rose!

This is an excellent compilation of Rose Murphy's "star-making" Majestic sides of the mid-40s, with a few rare, later Decca sides thrown in for good measure. An excellent introduction to this delightful performer. So where are her fine RCA sides? Oh that's right, BMG doesn't give a damn about the history residing in their vaults. So content yourself with these happy sounds and you'll find yourself inserting "chi-chi" into every song you hear for a day or two. Sound quality is fine.

Ohio has produced its' share of great musicians but two of its' major exports on piano have been Art Tatum and one Rose Murphy.Rose was born in Xenia,Ohio and her parents wanted her to be anything but a musician. She went college to become a teacher while keeping her musical aspirations on the QT.Eventually,to our benefit, her musical leanings won out and Rose went onto a very respectable career.

Her piano playing is extraordinarily good and many influences are obvious, not the least of which is Fats Waller. She has great control over many idioms in jazz playing including more classical jazz style along with stride and even a bit of boogie woogie when the occasion calls for it.Rose was always at her best in an intmate setting;clubs and such. This is music to drink, tap your feet and dance to.When you listen to her music you can almost picture her smiling face,up on a small stage playing just for you and your friends.Of course her big claim to fame is not only the spirit her recordings/playing invoke(keeping that great tradition popularized by Fats)but her trademark scat-like offerings throughout her songs.Listen to her "brrrps",her "chee-chee-"'s and her cute laughter that run behind each tune. She is having fun playing them and is asking you to join in it with her.And we do!

Rose also had a habit of stomping her right foot while playing. So forceful it was that it ruined more than one carpet until she got wise and started using a wooden board. And you will hear her foot tapping in all its' glory also on these recordings.

The recordings on this CD come from her Majestic,Mercury and Decca years in the late 40s and early 50s.We have some well known ones like "I Can't Give you Anything But Love" and "I Wanna Be Loved By You" and other offerings like "Jim" and the old standard "Me and My Shadow".Rose played standards and comtemporary songs with equal elan. The CD comes from France(the liner notes are in French and English) and the songs are remastered well ,as the sound is quite respectable. The only major flaw in this release is the lack of personnel listed in the liner notes,i.e there aren't any.

This CD is a welcome addition for long time Rose Murphy fans or those looking for an introduction to her work. When Rose passed away in 1989 we lost a truly original and talented artist.Give these recordings a listen and relive the joy and spirit that continues to live in them.
