Editorial Reviews

Savannah Churchill is one of the forgotten female vocalists of the 40's and 50's. This album is unique because it is the first to be devoted entirely to her work for the Manor Record label to be released on CD. Apart from a couple of recordings on compilations and a long deleted CD shared with another diva, it is her only album in the format. This 40-track 2CD set includes her huge 1947 hit ""I Want To Be Loved"" which topped the charts in America for 8 weeks and generated scores of cover versions. Once again, this album highlights the Acrobat principle of searching out and releasing recordings of neglected artists and this 2cd set is an important release. The booklet features a complete history of the artist and her work and includes rare photos and pictures of the original labels. A fitting tribute to one of the forgotten heroines of R&B.

3.0 out of 5 stars Noise anyone? October 2, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Great idea to have these rare records all in a two cd set but the original source for most of the songs unfortunately was not the best, there is a consistent surface noise and more thru all the songs, still there are some great arrangements and Savannah's lovely voice.

In 1941 a gorgeous 21-year-old Creole named Savannah Churchill (born Savannah Valentine in Colfax, Louisiana on August 21, 1920 but raised mainly in Brooklyn, N.Y.) with an equally-beautiful mellow voice, turned to singing to help support her family following the death in a car accident of her husband, David Churchill.

A year later she cut her first sides for Beacon Records, turning out Fat Meat Is Good Meat/He's Commander In Chief Of My Heart (Beacon 104) and Two-Faced Man/Tell Me Your Blues An' I'll Tell You Mine (Beacon 106) as a featured vocalist for Jimmy Lytell And His All Star Seven. She followed those in 1943 with the Benny Carter orchestra, performing Hurry, Hurry (which did well on local "race" charts), as the flipside of Carter's instrumental hit Poinciana (Song Of The Trees) on Capitol 144 as well as on Just A Baby's Prayer At Midnight on Capitol 165.

For the remainder of the war years she toured with Carter, including stints overseas, and finally made the national charts in 1945 billed as Savannah Churchill & Her All Star Orchestra with Daddy-Daddy, which reached # 3 on what was then known as The Most Played Juke Box Race Records (now the R&B charts) in late October for Irving Berman's tiny Manor Records label (Manor 1004 b/w All Alone) - later ARCO Records. Her next hit didn't come until 1947, but when it did it made a splash as I Want To Be Loved (But Only By You) soared to # 1 R&B where it stayed for 8 weeks, spending a total of 25 weeks on those charts in the spring. as well as # 21 Pop b/w Foolishly Yours billed as Savannah Churchill & The Sentimentalists (later to become The Four Tunes, on Manor 1046.

Great to be able to get this CD....some of the recordings a bit scratchy but I guess that is because they were taken from 78s....
