Book Description

June 1, 2010 6 and upI, Q (Book 2)

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue:
There was another knock on my door. I opened it.
Standing in the hallway was a very serious Secret Service agent.
“The President would like to see you both in the Oval Office,“ he said.
“Now?” I asked. It was 3 a.m.
He gave me a curt nod.
“Maybe we should change,“ I said.
“You’re fine,“ the agent said. “He’s waiting. Follow me.”
Angela and I were going to meet the president of the United States in our pj’s.

In Book One: Independence Hall, we met Q and his stepsister, Angela. We met their rocker parents, Blaze and Roger; we met the Secret Service team protecting the family; and we met the main players of the Mossad team that is following them.

Book Two takes us on another thrilling caper, this time to the White House where Q and Angela continue their quest to uncover the truth behind the supposed death of Angela’s real mother - a former Secret Service agent - while trying to differentiate the “good guys” from the “bad guys.”

4.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome 24-esque New Series for Tweens and young Teens, August 4, 2010
This review is from: I, Q: The White House (Paperback)
If the first book reminded me of 24, the second book is even more similar to the hit TV show, taking place in the White House, and actually occurring over a 24-hour period. I, Q: The White House contains slightly less violence than the first novel, so might be suitable for slightly younger audiences. However, terrorism is still a major theme, which would probably be scary and confusing to a reader too young to be able to handle the violence. As the title suggests, this story takes place in the White House. The President has two kids, Brittany, a teenager who has been fulfilling the social responsibilities of the First Lady since her mother's death, and PK ("President's Kid"), age 10, who is wise beyond his years.

The White House is always an interesting setting, because I think people wonder what it would really be like to live there.

Angela is getting closer to figure out the details about her mother's past, but she and Q are still in danger as they have to help figure out who the mole in the White House is.

I think that this series (I've read the first two books) is a wonderfully unique new offering for kids age 11 and up. There is some violence and the theme of terrorism, but especially if your child watches any sort of thriller/espionage type show on TV or in the movies, it isn't going to be too intense for them. There are guns and some fighting and even killing, but it is done in an age-appropriate way, especially if you think of it as a war story.

These books captured my attention as well, and so if you are an adult reader who enjoys thrillers, but wants to avoid the language and gore that does usually come with those, you should look into these books for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sequel! Fast-paced, current and really engaging., August 21, 2010

This review is from: I, Q: The White House (Hardcover)
Roland Smith has done it again. I started reading this book at about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and, in between dinner and watching the Red Sox, I finished it at 11pm. I couldn't put it down!

It picks up right after "I.Q.: Independence Hall" stops so I suggest reading that first. It's a great read for upper elementary and middle schoolers. The issue is current and the action is relentless. Many of my students really like anything CSI, detective, or spy-related and this is right up that alley.

The theme is a sensitive one, but it's done in an age-appropriate way. This book will immediately go onto my school library shelves and I will recommend it to any student looking for something with action and intrigue.

I hope Book Three comes out in short time. I want to know where the story goes next.
