Review

...shows his mastery of the horn...high luster on these recordings is far more than just an illusion of depth. -- JazzTimes (June 1997)

4 STARS…speaks a solo language rarely heard in jazz...showcases his gifts as soloist, composer, orchestrator, and instigator... -- Down Beat (September 1997)

4 stars! Command of a forbidding instrument that speaks a solo language rarely heard in jazz . . . [Clark] sets ambitious goals. . . He showcases his gifts as soloist, composer, orchestrator, and instigator. . . . He sets every stage and his solos are revelatory. -- y

Clark has conjured up a mercurial, exciting set. The CD runs the gamut musically - from the ravishing, leisurely title track . . .to a feisty take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin" and a deeply soulful rendition of "My One and Only Love". -- Jazziz, September 1997

Clark has conjured up a mercurial, exciting set. The CD runs the gamut musically -…deeply soulful… -- Jazziz (September 1997)

Critic's Choice. This newest set from progressive jazzman John Clark reaffirms his distinctive and engaging talent - and not just in [the] somewhat narrow field of jazz French horn players. -- Billboard, June 7,1997

John Clark . . . shows here his mastery of the horn in settings inventive and varied . . . rich sounds . . . The high luster on these recordings is far more than just an illusion of depth. -- JazzTimes, June 1997

5.0 out of 5 stars Horn Lord May 14, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
John Clark plays french horn in jazz, and this still seems enough of a novelty that it is often the theme of any review, with the reviewer rightfully praising John's fluidity on the horn. Beyond that, he has wonderfully arranged and channeled music that positively moves you. For me, the title, "I Will," inspired by a beautiful Baha'i prayer by Abdu'l Baha, and album speaks of affirmation and our power to grow as in: "I will no longer dwell on the unpleasant things of life. I will be a happy and joyful being."

John Clark get's it done with the F Horn. What a piece of work. The only other player that comes to mind is Julius Watkins years ago. Mr. Clark is the man with the horn now. His tone has never sounded better and he has surrounded himself with some all-star musicians in the likes of Howard Johnson, Bob Stewart, Stanton Davis, Bruce Ditmas and others. This record is simply amazing. If you love jazz or just brilliantly and beautifully created music then this is for you. This ranks up there among some of the finest jazz being played today. Highly recommended. 5 stars.
