Fresh-sounding and pleasant debut from MoZella,
By eric_f (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Will (Audio CD)
Having had no prior knowledge of MoZella, I bought this CD completely on a whim (the cover art grabbed me) and having listened to it a few times, I've formed my opinion that this is worth checking out. Mozella's style has a freshness to it not often heard in the music scene. This album is accessible without coming across as cliché, something that definitely works in its favor. Steady Hip-Hop style drum beats provide the foundation for melodic guitar and keyboard parts. In a way this album reminds me of Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" CD in that aspect. Fans of that album will most likely enjoy this.
The comparisons of MoZella's voice to Norah Jones are correct-she isn't necessarily a carbon-copy of Norah, but I can definitely see the similarity (that unique raspy tone). And I'd also compare her to Fiona Apple strictly in terms of tone of voice. Lyrics aren't this album's strong point though; to me, what makes it work are the catchy melodies and choruses. I don't think "You Wanted It" was the best choice for the opener, as this song is far from the strongest on the album. But tracks 2 through 6 are the meat & potatoes of this CD in my opinion. MoZella's singing compliments the songs so well on these tracks that I'd say these songs are worth the price of admission. The remaining songs are worthy as well, if a lot mellower. All in all, MoZella's debut album would make a great addition to any collection. Not necessarily the best release of the year, but great driving music, or just music to relax to.

Norah Jones Comparison? hmmmmmmmmm,

Mozella has a great voice and lyrical style. If I were to compare her to anyone (vocally speaking), (sorry Mozella...most artists hate to be compared), I'd say a mash-up between Esthero, Corrine Bailey Rae and Macy Gray. LOVE the tunes and wish her ALL the success she deserves!!!

This review is from: I Will (Audio CD)
A couple of weekends ago, I came across I WILL by Mozella at my library. On a whim, I checked it out. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard Mozella's voice is Macy Gray with a hint of Norah Jones. The only difference is that Mozella's voice doesn't irritate me like Macy Gray's does. Mozella's music is a subtle mix of pop, folk, blues, jazz, and a hint of jazz. I WILL is a solid album. It is filled with catchy pop hooks. The only issue I had with the album is Mozella's vocals. For the most part I don't mind her raspy vocals but her voice does occasionally rub me the wrong ways like on the ballad "I Will". Mozella's vocals definitely sounds better on the uptempo songs like "You Wanted It" and "Amnesia" (my personal favorite track). I'm not really big on the ballads except for "Can't Stop". It has a nice bluesy quality to the song. Plus Mozella's vocals really suits her well with the song's bluesy sound. I WILL may not be perfect but it sure is good. Mozella shows a lot of potential. I will be interested to see where her career will take off. I look forward to hearing more from this talented artist.

I was working at the Gap and heard a few of her songs, so I thought I'd invest and listen to more. It was a good choice!

Just not my thing,
This review is from: I Will (Audio CD)
She has a decent voice but the songs on here are all kind of slow, sad ballad types. There isn't anything with kick, anything with energy. Thankfully I borrowed this from the library and didn't waste my cash. I did buy her other CD, Belle Isle . I had heard a couple of songs off it and liked them well enough to splurge. It's a pretty good CD, not sure it rates the rave reviews but alot more energy and fun than I Will.

WE purchased the new Mozella-I WILL CD and shared it with our guests at a holiday party that we hosted. I must say, I own several hundred CD's and find myself playing these tunes in the car over my usual favorites. I think this CD will appeal to all age groups as the 30 year olds as well as the 80 year old people at our party enjoyed it. It is a WINNER!! Everyone must purchase this and enjoy....Congratulations Mozella! Easy listening, good beat, catchy tunes...Great music and lyrics!

Maverick was once a label that signed innovative new artists: Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Alanis Morissette, The Rentals, etc. But lately it seems they are confused as to what is going to tip. Ben Jelen is a talented writer and singer but the label bent his debut "Give it all Away" to sound like a pop parade (50,000 copies later they decided to drop him for Linda Perry to pick up). Maverick artist MoZella obviously is worthy of a major label contract. Her voice is like Macy Gray meets Sia meet Frou Frou. If anything carries the album, its her voice. But the songwriting and sound direction needs development. She shows no insight beyond what most people can sing about, and the instrumentals are a little too poppy (this may be how Maverick wanted it, but since the album didn't sell, they may reconsider). It will be interesting to see what MoZella will do on her next release.

I got this after I bought the 2 song release, and although two of the songs are repeated on this disc, it's still one of my new summer favorites. She's got a great voice and is interesting musically, too. Great lyrics, sing-able, dance-able-what's not to love?
