Editorial Reviews

I Will Not Be Afraid is the national debut album by Caroline Rose, a fiery 24-year-old songwriter raised on rockabilly, vintage country and blues infused rock; a self-proclaimed failed scholar and modern-day hobo who earned a degree in architecture (on a full-ride scholarship), then abandoned it all.

Produced, written and arranged by Rose and co-produced with multi-instrumentalist Jer Coons, the album chronicles Caroline s wandering years;
a disillusioned youth constantly demanding freedom and the most from life. Raised in the Northeast, Rose is a rare mix of Northern grit and Southern charm whose musical influences trace back to her family s Southern roots, running deep into the heart of Mississippi.

WOW! There are moments of pure, heartfelt ecstasy on this one and the rest is simply amazing. Without being derivative the influences of blues, Dylan, Radiohead, Neil Young and a hint of acoustic country seep out of her soulful voice, her narrative lyrics and the rough and tumble arrangements. The first thing that grabbed me was the melodies. Grounded in folk, rock and soul they start in comfortably familiar territory, but veer off in lovely or edgy ways. "I Will Not Be Afraid" is an easy song to like...simple and genuine. I'm still trying to catch all the lyrics...and wishing I had a lyric sheet...but what I've made out is intriguing. The rest of the songs have a more subtle appeal.

Two warnings:
There is another singer named Caroline Rose from Europe. She seems interesting but is not the same person.
The most easily enjoyable songs on this recording start with #3 - When You Go. The first two may not grab you right away. Don't let that deter you.

This is one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time and I would consider it a legit addition to American songwriter canon. It's that good, and there's not a track on the album I don't love. I've listened to it non-stop for two days and I couldn't say enough good about it. The songwriting is gritty and honest but also surprisingly self-aware for a 24 year-old. Comparisons to Dylan and Emmylou are by no means hyperbole, and I'd up the ante with Guy Clark for her empathy and nuance, Tom Waits for her lyrical gymnastics, and possibly Kristofferson for her political awareness and fearless delivery.

Voice-wise, she reminds me of a rockier Loretta Lynn: a warm and honest voice, with phrasing and conviction well beyond her years. It's done great justice by the production and accompaniment of Jer Coons. It's velvet in your ears, and production-wise, I'd probably put it in the same category of the feels-like-you-are-in-the-room-goosebumps as the Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Sessions". I've gone back and listened to some tracks just for the bass parts...

I'm really appreciative of Austin's KUTX FM for making "Blood on Your Bootheels" a heavy rotation track. I would otherwise have no idea who she was. This album totally made me a fan and instantly made Caroline Rose one of my favourite recording artists. If any of these comparisons mean anything to you, I'd HIGHLY recommend a listen. I'd be very surprised if she doesn't become one of your favourites too.

2nd album from artist out of Vermont—Americana roots-rock that mixes country/folk/blues elements with Rose’s insightfully uncensored & honest perception of life. Her voice has an open in-the-moment quality that adds a tag of back-alley sincerity to the Dylanesque street poetry of her lyrics. Pure & simple from-the-gut back-country bar-bop music for listeners who like it straight up.

What did a classic like Emmylou Harris or Patsy Cline sound like when they started? Listen to Caroline Rose and find out. I look forward to hearing more from her and her talented band. Keep 'em coming Caroline.
