Editorial Reviews

Bill Perkins is a special guest of the Metropole Orchestra on these studio sessions from 1989 and 1990. Backed by conductor Rob Pronk's lightly swinging arrangements, Perkins packs a punch with his effusive tenor sax in "I Wished on the Moon." He switches to flute for "Beautiful Love," which starts slowly before picking up the pace, while Perkins occasionally calls Eric Dolphy to mind with his bird-like runs. He is also hip to more contemporary sounds, as he plays soprano sax in the funky "Last Port of Call" (co-written by Lorraine Feather and Michael Cimbello). But Bill Perkins saves the best for last with a marvelous soprano sax solo in the exotic, tense arrangement of"Caravan."

Format: Audio CD
"Bill Perkins was known primarily as a tenor saxophonist. Born in San Francisco, California, Perkins started out performing in the big bands of Woody Herman and Jerry Wald. He also worked for the Stan Kenton orchestra, which subsequently led to his entry into the cool jazz idiom. He began performing with musicians like Art Pepper and Bud Shank, to name just a few. He was also a member of The Tonight Show band from 1970-1992. He is probably most remembered, however, for playing tenor for The Lighthouse All-Stars." He died in 2003

So much for biography....Bill was a tenor saxaphonist par excellance. Now Amazon has a list of the tunes & samples. On this one he plays with the Danish Metropole Orchestra & the results make for damn good listening.

It's very difficult to pick one tune as my favorite. After a really wonderful intro, Bill takes over on "Besame Mucho." Bill is a well kept secret in the world of jazz, but I feel that jazz afficionados & those who are not will love this album. It could alomost be clasified as "mmod music" in my opinion.

One more: Bill & the band do a wonderful job on "Caravan" written by Juan Tizol & Duke Ellington. Bill even does some flute work on this one. Maybe they saved the best for last.

I really like both artist and orchestra, but somehow the combo doesn't jell the way it should. The
rendition of Remember and several others are good but on the whole it wasn't memorable. It will not
be replayed often here.
