PreSchool-Grade 2-A child takes a flight of fancy when the family dog is transformed into a thinly disguised unicorn. The ensuing adventure takes the pair into a world filled with castles, monsters, dragons, and wizards. Exhausted, they fall asleep on the ground and awaken to find themselves home on the lawn. The youngster's imaginary romp is portrayed in clever, full-page pastel illustrations rendered in gouache. The picture of a naked evil wizard running away while the "unicorn" modestly covers its eyes is particularly amusing. The sparse, rhyming text works well as a read-aloud. The theme of this inventive story is reminiscent of Rafe Martin's Will's Mammoth (Putnam, 1989).

My daughter loved this book!
From the moment we borrowed it from the library, to the moment we returned it, we had to read it 3-4 times a day to her. (And when we returned it, we had to go buy it to appease her).
Beautiful prose, wonderful illustrations that stirred my daughter's imagination and caused her to stop me on each page and ask questions in delight.
This book is a definite "buy"!

The book is a delightful tale of the wonders of a child's imagination. A unicorn in the tale is a magical dog. In reality, a child's imagination never ceases to amaze an adult or a unicorn. It is a joy to read a simple tale of imagination in today's world of instant gratification.

Kudos to Heidbreder!
