In mere seconds, most of the world's population has been destroyed and died. That is bad enough, but a majority of these unlucky people have gotten up and begun walking. Unluckier still is our protagonist Jacob Plummer, a reporter untouched by this mystery virus. I say unluckier because Jacob is now forced to attempt to survive in this new world and he has taken it upon himself to find out the cause for this catastrophe.

Unfortunately, Plummer is soon infected and his search for the truth is now filled with an urgency to find a cure or at least ease the pain. This search brings forth information that is fraught with deadly intrigue....deadlier than anyone could have ever imagined.

With new friends, Jacob helps to fight off the growing undead horde in
hopes of saving himself and the planet from the rot growing within.

I Zombie I by Jack Wallen is funny, sad, tragic and a much deeper story than it may be given credit. Jacob Plummer, journalist turning zombie, offers seeks out that tiny a bit of hope for a world that has been destroyed by science. I liked Jacob, he was a good guy, someone who I think I might actually have enjoyed having as a friend. He had a bit of an agenda initially, but that agenda began to change as he saw what he was facing. He had flaws, some he admitted to having others we the readers can pick out, which means he was realistic and believable. Something I like in a character. Jacob's love interest Bethany was a kick...I liked her spunk and how she was a fiery redheaded nerd. (Nerds rule!) Oh and people, including fictional characters, who scream all the time during a zombie apocalypse where you have to be quiet, need to be shot. I'm not getting killed because you can't keep your mouth shut....

The story started off a bit on the slow side, but it did pick up pace eventually. The author created an interesting concept as to how almost the entire world's population was killed and brought back as undead. I Zombie I was descriptive, but not overly gory in its depiction of the violence the undead inflicted on the living and each other. Due to Jacob's having been bitten, the reader gets to learn a bit of how zombification feels and the reason for the need to ingest the gray matter of humans. Read more ›

I'll admit, I'm not much of a horror fan but this book was different. Yeah it's about zombies but it's quirky. I like quirky. If you liked the movie Zombieland, you'll like this book. There's lots of moaning and screaming and laughs. The beginning was a little slow for my speed but once you're through that, the book moves at a nice pace. The ending sets it up for the sequel.

Being that I'm from Hawaii, I personally loved the poi reference in the story. You'll have to read the book to figure out what poi and zombies have to do with each other.

In this book you get immersed in the world of Jacob as he witnesses how the world goes to complete zombie madness and how he slowly becomes one. Fascinating read and you will find it VERY hard to stop reading until you reach the end.

I read Mr. Wallen's I, Zombie, I, in one sitting. I've never been a fan of zombies, because well, they just stumble around trying to eat brains. Not exactly what I find interesting. I'm also not much of a horror fan.

But, I found I couldn't put this book down. The book is told from the first person perspective of Jacob, a self-depracating journalist with a brutal wit and interesting perspective on life. I found his journey fascinating, more so, because I knew what would happen: he was going to get bitten and turn into a zombie. I wondered how Mr. Wallen would handle this change, and I have to admit, he did it very well. The image of Jacob starting to drool and how he saw others watching him, waiting for the change, waiting basically for him just to be done with, was very poignant. Mr. Wallen masterfully conveyed the way people around Jacob changed as Jacob fell to the virus. What started out as a somewhat snarky-hero-zombie-book was transformed into something a little deeper and more disturbing by the addition of such depth to the world and people around Jacob. If you didn't care for Jacob at the beginning, you were rooting for him by the end.

All in all, this was a well-written treat, and I look forward to delving into the next book in the series. I'm so glad Wallen didn't take the stereotypical route of drooling-zombies-chasing-the-survivors. He managed to convey a fresh perspective on a well-beaten concept.

The prose lay on the page as dead as a zombie. I like for my zombie books to contain interesting action and involve me with the characters. i admire anyone who actually puts "pen" to "page" and writes a novel, and i give the author big cred for getting it together--but there are a lot of better zombie books out there.
