Granted the purpose of this book was to explain software development to his children, but anyone who would like a 100,000 foot overview of software quality assurance and development would enjoy this quick read!

I picked up this book when my kids were young and showed an interest in what I did for a living as a software tester. What I found was more than I expected. This book captures some of the more difficult concepts in the software profession using simple drawings and statements. As a result, I have also used this book when teaching software testing to people who are new to the profession.
This book is a gold mine for visual learners looking for simple ways to communicate some of the important challenges facing software testers and quality professionals! I highly recommend it as an addition to your library.

Software Development on the Children's shelf at the bookstore,
This review is from: I am a Bug (Hardcover)
Fifty-something unnumbered pages, each with a cute bug picture, a sentence at the top of the page about the picture, and a longer sentence at the bottom of the page about software defects, and how we deal with them. A very short read for an adult, and easy for a child too. Perhaps let your child read the top lines (the bug parts that go with the pictures) and, when curiosity awakens, you can explain more about the bottom lines (about software development). Not too many long words, and surprisingly (or rather, to the author's credit) this view of software testing and project management is faithful but not too complex.
For now, I think this book may still be one of a kind -- a children's picture-book about software development. Maybe as the field matures, there will be more. If your children can read Richard Scarry and learn about shopkeepers, police officers, and train engineers, why shouldn't they be able to read Robert Sabourin about software development? Ask for it at your local children's bookstore, but if it's not there, it's here. --- (Full disclosure: I circulated the publicly-available online version of this book at work, and asked the author about getting random access to the pages, and he was kind enough to send me a review copy.)
