If you are looking for Hyun Bin as the handsome leading man in a romantic comedy like 'My Lovely Sam-Soon' or 'The Secret Garden', you will be sorely disappointed by 'I am Happy' which is what I think happened to the other reviewers. If you want to see Hyun Bin expand his repertoire as an actor in a painfully realistic portrayal of someone literally drowning in his woes, you might want to consider giving this one a try, especially if you can view it at no additional cost with Amazon Prime.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but I don't think the majority of viewers (myself included) can fathom the extent to which a brother with a gambling addiction and mother with dementia could send you over the edge. Cho Man-Su, portrayed by Hyun Bin, is continually barraged by his brother's violent attacks to extort money. He wakes one night to his brother choking him. His brother threatens to burn down the house with all of them in it. Giving all of his money to his brother, Cho Man-Su is in danger of losing his business and home as he is unable to cover the bills. He's harassed by bill collectors and even has a run in with the criminal element. All of these events transpire in flashbacks and serve to illustrate Cho Man-Su's descent into his internal darkness. I did not find any of these flashbacks to be confusing.

Cho Man-Su is eventually institutionalized for insanity and the film is rather philosophical in its treatment of his insanity. At the institution he is able to leave all of his troubles behind. He develops friendships as well as a crush on one of the nurses. Overall, he is happy, but the doctor wants to "cure him" so he can go back to his former life. Cho Man-Su basically asks why can't they leave him be.

First, let me say that Hyun Bin is one of my favorite actors and his acting was top notch as always. The story itself is the problem. The ongoing flashbacks are stilted and confusing. The ending is confusing, and the whole movie just has a dark, depressing feel. Several times I almost gave up but I stuck with it because I'd paid for it. I kept hoping somehow, someway the ending would redeem the whole mess. It didn't. Don't waste your time or your money.

In this movie, Hyun Bin definitely outshines the female actress, and I believe they should get prettier actresses for him to be with it would be more believable. He definitely acts like a crazy person and is believable. I am Happy to always watch Hyun Bin.

I thought that this was going to be a sweet comedy featuring Hyun Bin. So, I was shocked to see how depressing the movie really was and I am not into drama like that. Still, I liked it because it probably shows how life is in S. Korea when you have family members who are sick (dementia, cancer) and even a gambling brother. In this country, even in The Dominican Republic, you can detach yourself from family members who are not doing so well. If they end up dead, you can continue with your life. This movie shows how Hyun Bin was affected and forced to deal with his Mother and Brother because he was responsible for them in the eyes of society. I don't think he develops a crush on the girl either. The nurse really doesn't indicate that she likes Man Chu or anyone else. She, I guess sympathizes with him because she's a nice person...but I never saw the relationship being more than Nurse-Patient and it was ok for me because she was battling her demons, not being able to afford a sick nurse for her dying father she has to care for him at the hospital. She was also driven to poverty because of caring for her sick father and having to pay hospital bills. But it would've been great if they both had realized that they were poor because of caring for family members. I was not in love with the ending but I understood it. Hyun Bin was excellent here though. I just like Hyun Bin and I think I would sit through this type of movie just to see him.

So sad. Hyun Bin just broke my heart in this role. His acting skills are quite impressive here; I've only seen him in My Lovely Sam-soon and Secret Garden, which are by the way both excellent, so it was interesting to see him playing a more downbeat character. I liked this film quite a bit and plan to watch it again later. I will add, however, that Amazon's description of this movie is not accurate -- this is not a romance. No character falls in love with another.
