I'm a real report developer on the east coast of the US, and yes, this is a real review. I have to admit that I am not a seasoned Cognos person - I come to Cognos from SQL Server/Business Objects and have been in data warehousing and reporting for 7+ years. I've been using Report Studio intensively for about 4 months now.

So far, none of the Report Studio documentation or books that I have read come close to being useful, even the user documentation from IBM. This "Cookbook" by Sanghani does give some helpful approaches to specific Report Studio questions/problems, but in no way is it a complete or thorough treatment of how to use Report Studio. At best it will help you figure out how to do some of those nagging little things that you know you should be able to do but just can't seem to figure out. It's best if you've already been using Report Studio for some time - this is not a book for newbies trying to learn the software. IMO, there is also too much of "Do exactly what I tell you" but not enough explanation of the "why" behind what you're told to do.

The English needs refinement. It's not blatant, and the text remains readable, but there are many annoying little English grammar and usage errors throughout.

All in all, OK if you want helpful hints, but don't look to it for anything more than that.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for ideas to overcome some of many challenges encountered while trying to learn Cognos Report Studio.

I work for a company which has recently made a decision to use the Cognos software platform for its performance reporting and data analysis activities. This encouraged me to attended training classes and read numerous technical books\articles on using Report Studio.

For the last few months, I have been struggling to master some techniques needed to produce exceptional business reports using Report Studio. Most of the technical guides that I have read contained long drawn-out explanations that were difficult to understand.

Within 1 week after purchasing the "IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Cookbook", I was able to use 3 techniques to overcome some challenges I was having in developing some reports.

The author of this book describes his techniques in a simple but effective form using "Getting Ready", "How to do it...", "How it works..." and "There's more...". This makes it easy for readers to easily interpret how to apply the technique being described. I really like the section describing "How it works..." because this is usually not included in most technical guides.

This is an excellent book and well worth the price.

There are a number of helpful hints and tips here. Some are dead on the money. However, trying to correlate his partial explanations of his examples, to actually applying it to closely related real world issues, is a no go. On one of the pages, he refers you back to IBM's documentation, that has no explanation of the code, and worse, he uses newer code and refers back to old code that won't work on other versions.

I'm surprised they didn't edit the book for grammatical errors. Someone else posted on it. For the price, its really sad.

IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Cookbook by Abhishek Sanghani is certainly the best Cognos authoring book. IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Cookbook is a mostly easy and fun read providing you with many insights and best practices on how to use Cognos Report Studio effectively.

I've been Cognos authoring since 2004 and sometimes think I know everything I need to know about working with the language. "IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Cookbook" made me realizes that there's always much, much more to learn.

This book is packed with incredibly useful information that every single Cognos developer should know. The best part is that Abhishek is simply organizing and presenting tried and true Cognos reporting and methods

In IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Cookbook, Abhishek does a great job describing best practices that you as report author will find useful on a daily basis. For example, I really found his example of the Abhishek (Chapter 3, page 79) quite interesting. Another Item that fascinated me, was Item 15 (page 73) Overriding crosstab intersection drill-through definition.

While the vast majority of the book was very easy to read and to understand, Overall, I highly recommend IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio Cookbook, which will continue to serve me, and likely you too, as an excellent reference resource.
