Save space on your desktop with the IBM ThinkCentre S50 (8183DBU), built for demanding professional computing tasks. It's a compact desktop PC that takes up 62 percent less space than the traditional IBM desktop chassis. This mid-priced desktop offers a 3.0 GHz hyper-threaded Pentium 4 processor, super-fast Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, floppy drive, and a CD-RW drive. It also features an internal power supply, two full-size PCI slots, and three bays for expansion.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: The ATA-100 (Enhanced IDE) 40 GB (7200 RPM) hard drive is small in comparison with other desktop PCs in this price range, but it's understandable due to its classification as a business professional computer (where much data is shared and stored on networked servers).
• Processor: The hyper-threaded 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor is at the low end of the spectrum for this processor (as of June 2005). Its hyper-threading feature allows this single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system, helping to deliver faster transistors and increased performance. It also features a fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed, which measures how fast a processor and the main memory communicate, and a 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)

  A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.

• Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (333 MHz) will handle the basics, but you'll want to add more to handle any kind of multimedia application and today's processor-intensive business productivity suites. This desktop has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
• CD/DVD Drive: This desktop includes a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, with 48x write/read and 32x rewrite speed for CDs and 16x read speed for DVDs.
• Keyboard & Mouse: The ThinkCenter S50 comes with an IBM Preferred Pro full-size keyboard (PS/2) and an IBM USB optical wheel mouse.

Chassis Design
It's encased in a durable black steel chassis that offers maximum flexibility for servicing and upgrading components inside the S50. Toolless-entry design makes upgrades easier and repairs faster with a cover that can be opened without tools, plus toolless slots and internal bays that flip up to allow components to slide out. ThinkCentre S50 desktops also feature an innovative "caddy" that surrounds the hard disk drive, locking it into place without the use of tools or screws. Rubber bumpers on the caddy decrease vibration and deliver quieter operation. Other mechanical improvements have been made to the overall design of the ThinkCentre PCs, including improved airflow and reduced noise.

Screen, Graphics and Sound
The integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 based graphics will be fine for business productivity software suites, Web browsing, and general purpose computing. It will produce a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and up to 16.7 million colors. It also features integrated SoundMax Cadenza audio and an internal mono speaker.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This S50 model has a good assortment of expansion capabilities for the office. It features a 3.5-inch, 1.44 MB floppy drive, and has the following external connectivity ports:

• 8 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
