When desktop real estate is at a premium, IBM’s ThinkCentre S50 series delivers the solution. 62% smaller than traditional IBM desktops, the ThinkCentre S50 series is the most space-efficient ThinkCentre chassis design with industry-standard technology. You’ll lose some of the perks you might find in other competitively priced desktops, yet this model, the ThinkCentre S50 818332U, nevertheless features a fast processor, Microsoft’s beefy Windows XP Professional operating system, and of course, IBM’s renowned three-year parts and labor warranty.

Anchoring the ThinkCentre S50 818332U is a speedy 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU, providing more than enough underlying power for most any task. Users will, however, want to double the 256 MB allotment of PC2700 DDR SDRAM memory if they plan to utilize demanding applications or engage in constant multitasking. Furthermore, gamers and 3D artists will also need to upgrade the included Intel Extreme Graphics video controller or move to a more upscale ThinkCentre model in order to experience smooth rendering of their favorite 3D programs.

The ThinkCentre S50 818332U features nominal data handling options. IBM has include a smallish 40 GB hard drive on which to store your applications and files, and a CD-ROM drive through which you can play audio CDs and load programs. In its stock configuration, the unit does not support CD burning or DVD playing and writing.

To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders and cameras, scanners and external drives, IBM has added no less than eight USB 2.0 ports (two on the front) and an IEEE 1284 FireWire port. Other desirable amenities include an integrated Intel PRO/100 Ethernet connection for high-speed network and Internet interaction, an IBM Preferred Pro Full size PS/2 keyboard and a precision-built, hassle-free IBM USB Optical Wheel Mouse PS/2 wheel mouse (no moving or mechanical parts to degrade or get dirty). Amazingly, the diminutive ThinkCentre S50 818332U also features two free PCI slots (typically used for add-on cards such dedicated audio or video cards). IBM has not enclosed speakers or a monitor, thus allowing you to utilize your current monitor or select from the many alternatives currently available.

Bundled software includes Microsoft’s Windows XP Professional Edition operating system, the Lotus SmartSuite Millennium productivity suite, and a variety of useful computer maintenance utilities.
