If there's one brand that's virtually synonymous with high-end business notebooks, it's ThinkPad. And the IBM ThinkPad T22 is, as usual, an impressive specimen that manages to be highly portable yet still provide much of the power of a desktop PC. It's built around a 900 MHz Pentium III processor and comes standard with 128 MB RAM (expandable to 512 MB), a 20 GB hard disk drive, and an 8x DVD drive. The 1,024 x 768 display measures 14.1 inches diagonally, and both networking and a modem are standard. Not surprisingly, the notebook is equipped with the business-oriented Windows 2000 rather than the consumer Windows Me; Lotus's SmartSuite set of productivity applications is included as well. One downside is that the IBM name does command something of a price premium: the ThinkPad is more expensive than many notebooks, even ones with similar specs.
