Amazon.com Review

Save valuable desktop space with the IBM ultracompact cordless phone. It combines 900 MHz technology, hands-free operation, and many popular features-- all in one compact design. The handset measures only 4 by 2.25 by 1 inches.

To set up the phone, we installed the batteries, plugged in the AC power, and connected the phone to the phone jack. The handset is about the size of a pager and includes a detachable belt clip for easy transport. The base is almost as small, making it great for desks with limited space. The LCD shows the time and the number you are dialing. Icons on the LCD indicate the status for functions such as the alarm, pager, battery, and signal strength. The handset can be positioned faceup on the base for convenient LCD viewing.

A single function button operates many features, such as time set, memory dialing, and ringer adjust. Up to 10 numbers can be stored in memory. Press the function button until the memory icon appears in the LCD window. Choose a number between 0 and 10, dial the number you wish to store, and press the function button again to save. To dial a saved number, press the function button and then the designated memory number.

We found the alarm function to be a unique and useful feature. To set the alarm, press the function button and then the 2 button. Enter the time you want the alarm to sound and then press the function button to save. To turn the alarm on, press the function button and then the 3 button. The alarm icon will appear in the LCD and a beep confirms the alarm has been activated. Following these same steps will also turn the alarm off.

In our tests of the IBM ultracompact phone, we were able to use the handset up to 200 feet from the base. Between 200 and 500 feet, static became disruptive, but we were still able to maintain a conversation without losing transmission. For hands-free calling, a headset is included. Voice quality on the headset was clear and sensitive, picking up sounds such as breathing, which we found slightly annoying. Although the fit of the headset is somewhat limited, its cushioned earpad and adjustable microphone are comfortable. --Emily Bakko

Pros:

  • Ultracompact size; goes anywhere
  • Alarm function
  • Headset included

Cons:

  • No mute button
  • Headset has limited fit

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat this price for a great product, June 19, 2000

This review is from: IBM 900 MHz Black Ultra-Compact Cordless Headset Telephone (Office Product)
The IBM 900-MHz Ultra-Compact Cordless Handset is a great item to have when you need to have your hands free while you work. The handset is the size of a pager, which makes it very easy to attach to your belt or even a waistband. The range of the handset from the base is un-believable. I walked away from my house approximately 10 to 15 yards (from the base) before I received a warning signal letting me know that I was out of range from the base and it did not lose connection. The outgoing tone is very clear according to others on the receiving end. In addition to being a charger, the base of the unit is a speaker box as well. This is great when you don't want to use the headset. You can't beat this product for the price, but it does not include a mute button. I find that a mute button is a necessary feature since the speaker is very sensitive and the receiver can hear a pin drop in the background. So don't sneeze or you might blow your parties ears off. I highly recommend this product to those who want and need a hands free telephone but don't have the money to spend on an expensive brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars A piece of defective junk, May 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: IBM 900 MHz Black Ultra-Compact Cordless Headset Telephone (Office Product)
I paid plenty for this phone and expected it to work. However, the keypad never worked properly. Numbers which I dialed were not received by the phone, or numbers which I did not dial were received instead. Within 10 months, the phone's reception was not working consistently, crackling and making it impossible to use. I tried replacing the battery, which I had to order by mail.... No dice, the problem remains. I called the maker, TT Systems, and they told me that since it was out of warranty, tough luck. I'll never buy another "IBM" phone again, and IBM should be more careful about their licensed products. Buyer beware!

My husband bought this phone when I was pregnant 2 years back, and I have had it ever since. Its a great phone, its pretty light and can easily fit in the pocket. My phone is 2 years old and still working. I have given it as a gift to several of my friends and they all seem to be happy with it.
