The compass function shows the direction you are going and the navigation function shows the direction and distance to a waypoint. The IC-M92D floats in the water in the face-up position and lets you know where it is with the LCD flashing and audible beep alarm feature as an aid for retrieval in the dark. The radio has IPX7 submersible protection (1m depth for 30 minutes). The new menu system provides easy and intuitive operation. The bottom line of the full dot-matrix display shows the software key functions which can be toggled with the left and right buttons. I like the quality, ruggedness, and intuitive user interface. And I LOVE my VHF radio having DSC and GPS/NAV capabilities. Just two caveats;

1) This radio is BIG. It dwarfs my beloved Icom M72. It's an inch taller, roughly a half-inch wider and roughly a half-inch thicker. If it were any bigger you really couldn't call it a hand-held.

2) Even though it's big the display is small, forcing some of the characters to be tiny. I'm middle-aged and there's no way I can read the lat/lon off the screen without my reading glasses. I was hoping I could carry this on me in the event I go overboard - my thinking was that I could call in my lat/lon from the water without having to carry anything else (like a separate GPS). I don't think it's going to work for that unless I'm lucky enough to be wearing my reading glasses when I go in. Of course you still have that DSC Distress button so that mitigates this to some degree.

In summary, Icom quality and ruggedness and intuitive to use. But before buying consider how you'll wear/keep this as the size is not handy. And if you're old enough to use reading glasses consider how this will fit into your boating regimen.

My hobby is to chase dinghy sailors on the Connecticut coast between October to December. My job is to pull the sailors out of the water and right their boats when they capsize. Since I am piloting a 13' Whaler with a very old motor, things can get pretty exciting. My crew and I can get soaked and the boat full of water. Countless times, after pulling out the sailor, emptying their dinghy and sending them back to sailing, I've found my beloved old MIV in 6" to 10" of cold salt-water - shaken off the water - it never failed. The troubles with the MIV are engine static was so strong I had to move 5 feet away to receive and transmit, it sank like a rock and salt water was getting to the electrical connections. Since I bought the older Icom the first day it appeared in the store (serial # 10555. Battery serial # 00005), I decided it was time for a replacement.

The M92D has everything I was looking for: It floats; Noise suppression makes it possible to hug the motor and receive and transmit static free, even on the lowest suppression level. The added GPS, which makes it possible to have the DSC, Man-over-board, Waypoint, compass and NAV functions, made it impossible to pass up.

So far, the M92D has lived up to expectations. It has been in the water twice. It floats and the beeper and lights work. It didn't need the speaker to be cleared. Next time I am on the water, I will try out the Waypoint and Nav functions. When it hits the water again, I will test the AQUA function.

I whole-heartedly recommend this radio. I don't think the price is too high. Be prepared for the DSC instructions to be lengthy and a little confusing, but study them and study them again. Don't mess with DSC until you know precisely what you are doing.

Have used ICom products before and found them very reliable with great performance.
This radio lived up to ICom's high standards with some new features that provide additional levels of safety and communications.
Very high value, I was pleased to have paid a little more for the upgraded version and when I discovered the additional features, I was very glad that I chose this model radio.
Excellent all the way around.

This is rather large (thick) for a handheld. The screen letters are pretty small but the channel indicators are easy to read.
The GPS addition is the reason I bought it because I want to use in on my dingy for radio and navigation.
The navigation function is really pretty much an afterthought. It shows lat/lon and stores 50 waypoints to 3 decimal point precision. When you try to navigate to a waypoint you only get a .1 nautical mile precion for distanct to go. A .1 nautical mile circle is a large area of water by today's accuracy measures. It wouldn't require much to include 3 digits of precision for distance to go and a little more modern steering indicator that just a compass heading.
I have used ICOM for radios for years and years and they are well made and dependable and this unit looks like it is the same.
I just wish they had enhanced the GPS functions to make it really useable.

I love my ICOM IC-M92D hand held VHF marine radio with the built in GPS. It works great, it is totally waterproof and floats. The only issue I have with it is the readability of the smaller text. If the screen were a bit bigger for larger numbers, it would be perfect. Still, it is an excellent unit & I intend to keep this one & continue using it. May even get another for my wife.

I took this handheld on several sailing trips. The battery held OK. It has some navigation features, shows your course and bearing to the way-point. The screen is small for navigation of course. I have not used the DSC Distress button yet (nor channel 16 for that matter). Note if you press the key lock button accidentally, the device will seem frozen (not responding to input)
