How is this "Volume 3" of his greatest hits? It's not a sequel to either "The Best That I Could Do 1979-1988" (in which case it would still only be "Volume 2") or "Words & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits" since there's too many repeats from both collections. So what the heck is this?? Plus, it seems to be an entry in the "ICON" series, which typically are just named for the artist and don't have an actual title. I don't get it.

Having said that...as a standalone collection, it's pretty poor. It would only be worthwhile if it's put alongside the mythical Volumes 1 & 2, which would contain hits like "I Need A Lover", "Hurts So Good", "Authority Song", "Rain On The Scarecrow", "R.O.C.K. In The USA", "Cherry Bomb", "Get A Leg Up", etc., etc., etc.

Stick with "Words And Music" instead, which contains every notable hit he ever had from 1979 through 1998. The only song here that one doesn't have is "Minutes To Memories", an excellent album track from "Scarecrow" (his best record, in my opinion).

5 stars for the music, -1 stars for the misleading packaging, title...heck, everything else about it. Overall rating of 2 stars.

Music: 4.5 stars; Compilation: 1 star; Packaging: 0 stars; Economic value: 3.5 stars stars; New relevance: 0 stars.

I saw this at my local library the other day, and was really surprised so I picked it up, being intrigued in particular as it is titled "Vol. 3" (more on that later).

"Nothing Like I Planned - Greatest Hits Vol. 3" (11 tracks; 46 min.) brings a random collection of John Mellencamp songs and there truly is no rhyme or reason as to either the selection of these songs, or the sequencing of these songs on this compilation. There are the usual suspects like "Jack and Diane", "Pink Houses", "Paper On Fire", "Crumblin' Down", etc. but then there some selections of songs that sure are great but I don't remember them as being hits ("Minutes to Memories", "Ain't Even Done With the Night"). This is one weird release! I am trying to understand the reasoning behind it. Logic might indicate, looking at the title, that this could be viewed as a 'sequel' to 1997's "The Best That I Could Do", except that most songs on these compilations overlap. And as to the reference to "Vol. 3", 2004's "Word & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits" does contain 2 CDs, but again most songs on there overlap with this release.

Let's call a spade a spade: I see this as nothing else as a shameful money grab by the record label, slapping this with a "Vol. 3" tag, in the hope of confusing some customers into thinking that this is a new compilation of some sort. The packaging of this compilation is terrible, with zero lines notes, zero information when the songs were released, from what album, what they did on the Billboard Hot 100, etc. and of course no lyrics. I imagine that John Mellencamp would cringe when he sees this release (not that he can do anything about it), and rightfully so.

This is NOT a "Volume 3" of any type of greatest hits released by John Mellencamp! There are already three other compilations out there that are greatest hits so why would this not be "Volume 4"?! I was told that this has "Volume 3" in the title because there are already two other SINGLE DISC greatest hits on the market. But like the first poster says half of this release is already on the other compilations! Unless these are different versions of the songs but there is no indication of that! So they just overlap as one and the same selections of tracks. I have never seen such drivel of misinformation by a major recording artist! I guess actually get this release because it will probably be taken off of the market because the title does not make any sense in terms of any other compilations existing unless this is supposed to be an artistic joke and if it is it is a bad one as both me and other people go looking for the first two John Mellencamp "ICON" compilations...which don't exist. Maybe no one cares when it comes down to it.

Perhaps the original title for this product was going to be called "IRONIC: I've Had A Title Like This One Before - Greatest Hits Volume 17". It's just the first 16 greatest hits compilations have not been released yet. Those will come out in trilogies, contain prequel volumes, spin-off compilations, various versions of compilations, and will come out "in due time".

Of course what is IRONIC is that the whole title would have been fine including the description of it being a greatest hits it is just the "Volume 3" detail that has people full on confused. I wonder if there will be clear explanation for this? Considering there really are not a volume 1 or 2 I wish whoever luck doing that. :)

I just bought it today at Wal-Mart for 7 bucks. Yeah, I don't get the vol. 3 thing.. my guess was because his greatest hits had 2 discs, they made this a 3rd disc to the greatest hits, which wouldn't make any since, since most of these songs are already on his greatest hits, and theres already 3 other cds just like this one, His Greatest Hits Words and Music, The best that I Can Do, And The Best of John Mellencamp: 20th Century Masters. I really don't know if John Mellencamp had anything to do with this album, because its ICON, I think they made it, Im sure Mr. Mellencamp is wondering the same thing, maybe he walked in to a Wal-Mart and saw it on the shelf and said to himself, What The ****?? because that's what I did!!!
