Going way back to the "Muscle and Hate" days of Join in the Chant I was pleased to hear these guys blossom with more "musical" pieces from Ebbhead. This album is a continuation of the trend showing years of additional experiences to make a very complete sound with their old flavor still predominant! If you're still desiring the monotone earliest industrial sound, this may disappoint you but for the maturing musical fan, this will be a great blast from the past with flavor to savor from "today". I've always liked "comping a few songs" better than complete album listening but I've gotten through this a few times back to front with a strong start and cool finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars semi-back to the roots and bright perspective of future, February 23, 2010
This review is from: ICP (Audio CD)
I remember I became a Nitzer Ebb fan when they released Big Hit back in 1995. I like that album, even though it's true it was a departure from their usual style. Anyway, when I read they were going to release a new album after 15 years of silence, I was afraid. I instantly thought of Front 242's return album 'Pulse', which, although has its moments (some really really fine) is a bit lame.
When I first listened to some snippets from two new songs, I was even more afraid they were not going to make it. Too retro they sounded to my ears.

But (here comes the but) Industrial Complex was finally released, and since Nitzer Ebb has been among my 5 favourite bands ever, they deserved attention: so I listened to it, and listened to it again, and again, and again...and I can't say but favourable words about it.

It's not a groundbreaking album, that's for sure. It's nearer a back to the past album than rather a back to the future, but that doesn't imply it doesn't add up anything interesting. It actually slaps on their face on those bands which I won't mention that are copying once and again Nitzer Ebb's schemes. One thing is to be inspired by, and another to copy every single detail of a band. Well, at least, that means Nitzer Ebb, which anyway also were inspired by DAF, created a personal hallmark.
So how does the album sound? It has all the ingredients you'd expect from Nitzer Ebb: heavy basslines looped mesmerising you while the beats and obviously McCarthy's powerful but also melodic voice drives you by the hand through that loop. That has always worked and I can assure you it works now.
It's true that Nitzer Ebb evolved from their chant-style in That Total Age to the more melodic EBM in Ebbhead; well all those elements are present in Industrial Complex.
There's not a bad song here, but obviously every one of us will have our favourite. To me, the more average songs are I Don't Know You and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, although That Total Age fans will love the latter; it could fit perfectly in that album.
The rest are very good songs, some very bass-oriented in a somewhat Belief-style, such as Promises or Down on Your Knees; some are a bit more funky and bluesy in a somewhat Showtime-style, such as Never Known or Travelling; ther are some quieter moments and believe me they work perfectly: songs like Going Away, which have no beats at all but a splendid bass drive us throughout all the song and I'm Undone with its somewhat dissonant piano melody are really delicious; and there are also noisier moments, such as Payroll and more melodic ones such as Once You Say or Hit You Back. What you won't find is guitars here. All's electronic, with some piano sounds in a couple of songs.

Really, I'm no fanboy. I don't like what a band do simply because of their name. And I agree this album is not very risky since they decided to walk on grounds they know well. But man, what they do they do it fantastically. I for one am very happy for their return and I hope they will release new albums in the future.
