Faustian Space Musick-Remembering the Titanic, April 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: II (Audio CD)
This is titanic monolith of an album that like its artistic kindred(ie. the Tower of Babylon, the S.S. Titanic, and the Roman empire) is astonishing in it grandeur but ultimately lies smoldering in the flames of Gotterdamerung. I don't know exactly what these blokes where going for but in its spectacle it implodes on its self. This by no means is a bad thing(most rock fosters this very succesfully) but ultimately it means that destruction is just around the bend and that is most certainly the case here. The album 17 tracks long is filled to the brim with martial rythms, blindind distortion on guitars and vocals and some very catchy melodies to boot. The criticism may be: Too much of everything! They are obviously reaching for a sound that is beyond the infinite and invariably tumble to the earth. A blinding immense album worthy of note. The sonic equivalent of pushing the pedal to the maximum and paying the price. RECOMMENDED

INdustRial Mondo FuzzBOMB!, February 18, 2003

Distortion Fuzzy Fuzz upon Fuzz distortion. If there was justice in this twisted world and I was able to spike the goons from Nine INch Nails evian water bottle with 10 hits of LSD..this is what the result would sound like. Something like what you hoped Les Ralize De Nudes were..instead of the scratchy blurry of a squeak they left behind. LIstening to this album though I don't think there amplifiers made it out alive. BOMBASTIC!!

Brilliant second release!, January 29, 2003

Skye Klad's first album was definately one of the better releases of 2001 and to my ears one of the most original. The sound being what I could only describe as "No Wave Psychedelia". Dig that Swans influence in "Amber!" The second album delivers a more concise and in my opinion more sophisticated song structures that show greater depth than your normal psych/spacerock band.I actually have little time for most of those type of groups. The lineup change also has added a cool change to the sound. The original lead vocalist Adam Backstrom being replaced by guitarist Jason Kesselring; has given the band a slighty darker edge which is very cool. All in all the band sounds like a post shoegazer group like Brian Jonestown or maybe even the Dandy Warhols being produced by Al Jourgeson... Space rock or not this rocks!

Never Mind the Bollocks!, January 3, 2003

This is simply a great CD! Comparable(within the realms of Kosmiche musick) to Faust IV or Amon Duul II more song orientated efforts. But don't get me wrong this is very modern and bubblegum in deliciously diabolical way.

Another excellent dark psych release!, January 2, 2003
By A Customer

A year after the release of their successful first-length album Skye Klad returns with a new lineup and a heavier, fuzzier approach. This CD more along the lines of Bardo Pond sludge crossed with shoegazer pop. Shorter, tighter songs and what I consider more sonic exploration. The first CD featured more clean sounds and space. This one creates a wall of sound with layers of fuzzy guitar and effects. Fans of Sonic Youth, Chrome, and Brian Jonestown Massacre take note.

Sophomore Jinx?, January 24, 2003

After a great first album, this one comes as a major disappointment. The way back through to inner space is via the heavy mind exploding space warp conjured up by the first CD.

Not for the faint of heart but worth the scare, December 12, 2002

An unlikely combination of 1960's KASENETZ&KATZ bubblegum and Bardo Pond sonicsludge that is as goofy as it is appealing. If you are looking deep space trip out drones don't look here! This a album of 60s bubblepop hooks amplified through a wall of fuzztones. A very intregueing album if dissapointing that doesn't show the bands prowness in intestellar space jamming.

A disappointing second album, December 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: II (Audio CD)
With what sounds like a new direction, this album borderlines silly and ridiculous and wonders a bit too far into the nerdy land of Dungeons and Dragons. This comes a quite a disappointment after the band's first space-rock themed releases of Extreme Vacuum Person EP and their first full length Skye Klad (skye Klad) where the band truly seemed to be pioneering a new wave of psychedelic renewal. Now it seems that this has all but died. Like the old hippies before them, their time has come and past. The vocals have taken a step from dark and brooding to just plain goofy. The music is sound. The band sounds tight, but still sounds immature in what can only be described as what sounds like musical boredom. The only light at the end of the tunnel is their odd cover of Irving Berlin's Blue Skye. A fun and fresh take on the old standard. I hope that they can find what ever medicine they need to take to start towards the path that they need for recovery.
