5.0 out of 5 stars The Basics and So Much More
I bought this book thinking it was a book for beginner's like myself. And, even though it does cover all of the stuff that I needed to learn, install, and administer IIS 5, it just has so much more. I see the reviews here and they all talk about something really neat about the book. And, I agree with all of them. But, something that really sticks with me after reading...

I am horribly disappointed in this book. I bought it because of it's high score. It covers a multitude of topics at a very shallow level and most of the topics it covers I don't even think belong in a book on IIS. I see the reviews here and they all talk about something really neat about the book. And, I agree with all of them. But, something that really sticks with me after reading through this book is how also walks through HTML, DHTML, VBS, ASP, Java, and how to connect to databases. I'm really new to internet servers and languages, but this book was easy enough to read that I understand it completely. And, I know exactly how it all works with IIS because of all the script examples included in the pages. I didn't know how much IIS uses VB Script. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I am horribly disappointed in this book. I bought it because of it's high score. It covers a multitude of topics at a very shallow level and most of the topics it covers I don't even think belong in a book on IIS. Some of it's information is plain wrong too, for example the coverage of authentication. It's coverage of important IIS issues like creating virtual directories for web sites is non-existent. It's where it should be strongest - configuring web sites and servers - that it is weakest. If I could give this 0 stars I would to hopefully prevent anyone else from making the mistake I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars IIS 5.0 - Full Metal Jacket, December 28, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) (Paperback)
I have to admit, this book kept me reading long into the night. It is easy to read and easy to understand. After reading it I can honestly say there were tidbits of information in it that I literally could not find anywhere else. I've bought the other IIS books, so I have some good knowledge under my belt. But, this one seemed to have everything the other books had and so much more. Its funny...the other books I have are approximately 400 pages just like this one. But, what the other books cover in the full 400 pages, this one covers in the first 4 or 5 chapters, and then goes on to cover everything else under the sun for IIS 5.0.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Guide for Beginners!, June 16, 2002
This review is from: IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) (Paperback)
I can't believe all the information in this book! It is written very logically, allowing you to understand IIS, then to learn the technologies involved, then how to install, upgrade, and migrate systems, then on to troubleshooting problems. Reading this book from cover-to-cover is a must! It helps you to step-through the learning process at a pace to really understand IIS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it!, April 11, 2002

Ever since Rod Trent started writing books, I've tried to pick them all up. Every book is written so I can understand it and written where I can become smarter in my job. The IIS 5.0 book is no different. I hadn't read the book yet, but we had an IIS 5.0 problem that we couldn't find the resolution to. I told my co-workers that I had recently purchased a book on IIS. We opened to the troubleshooting section and fixed our problem in a matter of minutes. My co-workers immediately jumped out to Amazon.com and bought their own copy. Thanks, Rod!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good book on IIS : it describes , it does not explain, January 2, 2004
This review is from: IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) (Paperback)
I bought this book in order to master IIS for my own web site and for those of my clients.
I am very disappointed.
This book has 486 pages and only 33 pages are covering one of the most important subject which is the IIS Web Server.
This book does not explain the things but describes them. For example, the chapter about the Web server is in fact nothing more than a description of the different menus : if you click on this menu than you'll click on this menu, if check that box than you'll check that box and so on.
Instead, I would have expected to have explanations of how to set up a web server: What is a home directory ? what is a virtual directory ? how it works ? why would you use them ?...
By the way, the book does not talk about this important notion of virtual directory (apart one line at the end of the book in appendix C).
On the other hand, the book has also many pages talking about subjects that are not directly related to its title.
Instead of talking about W2K Exchange 2000 or W2K Active Directory it would have been much more profitable to have a better explanation of how the IIS SMTP Server works.

I rarely buy a book I am completely satisfied with. The author took the time to include all the topics I needed to understand IIS 5.0 and to understand what IIS 5.0 can do for my company. Its written in a clear, easily understandable manner so even my small brain can go from newbie to pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally someone let the light shine on IIS, December 13, 2001

This review is from: IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) (Paperback)
Okay, so my team was faced with the project of building multiple IIS servers. I hadn't installed IIS since the first release that came with NT server. This book saved us. The author speaks English, and guided us easily through the steps from unwrapping to unveiling into production environment. Nice usage of diagrams, hints & tips, and information not readily available elsewhere (that we could find). Anyone who feels overwhelmed by IIS should use this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars *****10 STARS***** Don't listen to the negatives up here, February 25, 2004
By
This review is from: IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) (Paperback)
It's excellent! It's a perfect book for someone like me who got dumped into the position of NetAdmin with very little knowledge of anything server related. I am flying by the seat of my pants and this book is my worthy, knowlegable co-pilot! It has been the one book that has saved our network from certain doom at the hands of a kicking and screaming newbie (no, i didn't want the job, it just fell to me...)

If you read it, it's just fantastic. Start at page one and go all the way through. I know it's not as fun as hanging out drinking a brew with the girlz (or boyz) but if you do it, you will reap the rewards. It will take you from newbie lack of confidence to having enough confidence to run your network AND you get enough about other technologies to know where to start looking for information if/when you need it.

Some of the reviews here are really negative. One person said that in no place did the book mention virtual directories. Well, I just did a search of the books contents right here on Amazon and it came up with 46 references to virtual directories. So I think that if people don't like this book it is because they aren't reading it.

So do yourself and your company a favor and just buy the book already. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I can only rate this with 5 starz cuz thats all Amazon offers, but I really mean 10. Okay? Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Beginner to Pro, April 18, 2002

This review is from: IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) (Paperback)
Best value book I've bought in a long time. The entire 600+ pages are filled with information that I just keep using. My company is really intent on becoming web-enabled, and this book allowed me to start from the ground-up and then keep on going. I've looked through other IIS 5.0 books in the bookstore, but this one has everything I need.
