I bought this for practicing my bass silently. I'm primarily a drummer and just an amateur bassist, and I don't care much about amp modeling or using this adapter to record; all I wanted was a low-noise, high-quality headphone amplifier. I've purchased bass headphone amps in the past (including the Vox amPlug AC30 Guitar Headphone Amp and the Rockman Bass Ace Headphone Amplifier), and they were too noisy while producing too little output. The iRig HD, on the other hand, is completely quiet, and works well at any volume. I've used it 4 ways:

- iPhone 5 with GarageBand
- iPhone 5 with Amplitube Free
- MacBook Pro with GarageBand
- MacBook Pro with Amplitube 3

All of these setups produce crisp, accurate, noise-free sound. Amplitube 3 (free download; additional amps/effects are extra) includes a nice bass amp setup that sounds great to me, perfect for playing along with music and instructional DVDs. GarageBand works fine as well on the Mac. Neither of the iOS apps above include a bass amp as far as I can tell, but the basic setup sounds good to me. The iOS Amplitube app has crashed once, but no problems otherwise.

Build quality seems very good. The housing is plastic but seems durable, and the jacks are solid and without excess play. So far I've only used the Lightning and USB cables; I haven't needed the 30-pin (older iPhone/iPad) adapter.

For my purposes, as a headphone amplifier for practicing, it's working perfectly. The setup is a little cumbersome: instrument cable -> iRig HD -> iPhone/MBP -> Headphones, but the quality is MUCH better than the analog bass headphone amps I've tried in the past.

I bought the first, analog, iRig and the noise was so anoying that I gave it away and bought a Roland Cakewalk UA-1G.
I got surprised on how seamless easy to use and good the iRig HD is.
If something deserves to be called "plug and play" is the iRig HD.
No audible noise introduced neither by the interface nor by the instrument (once you use a good cable as the Planet Waves B0002GMGV8 )
Worked as expected with Garage Band and Amplitube in my iPad (lightning connector), iPhone (30 pin) and Macbook Pro (USB)
I found it at comparable sound quality level of Roland Cakewalk UA-1G interface and yet more versatile as I can connect the iRig HD in all my gizzmos.
It is a must have for any level students or even more serious musicians on the move or anyone that has a small room to practice.

Bit rate improvement very noticeable, worth the extra $$!! Heavier, better built, less noise, overall superior to the iRig. Thanks!

I have been using the original iRig with Amplitude on my iPad for a good while. Its a great practice machine! Gets me through the dry spells with the band. I then opted for iRig HD. WoW! What a difference! My guitars sound so much better now when I practice. I didn't realize how much sound I was losing in the interface. Now I have crystal clear tone and each guitar's individual characteristics punch through. Well worth the investment.

Great sound. I love the software interface I use on my iPad. The mixer and studio are easy quick way to record sounds and rhythm tracks. Good studio quality sound.

This is an awesome recording tool that I ordered for my son for Christmas. He is a touring musician and is using this to write and record music on his iPad.

This is a major improvement over the original iRig. You still cannot use it while charging your device's battery or it will be incredibly noisy.
