Awesome to have a stand...but could be so much better,

I bought this to use my iPad as a notes prompter for my band. I gigged with it for the first time last night. Just having the iPad on stage with me by my mic using Keynote to page through my song notes was FANTASTIC. This iKlip stand allowed that to happen. So I'm very glad I got it.
BUT I expected it to be so much better. Here's why: - I wanted to mount it on the upright part of a boom mic stand. But the iKlip's collar only allows for a fairly narrow range of stand diameters. This is a big deal since this limitation makes this product useless on any post greater than about 1/2" thick - It is made of thin hard plastic. I am very hesitant to throw this stand in with all my other metal gig-worthy hardware during transport for fear of breaking it. Sooner or later I expect I'll snap off one of the arms - Whoever designed it to require a complete disassembly with screwdriver just to change it from landscape to portrait should be slapped. - The mount isn't far enough away from the post to allow for enough freedom of tilting

IPad fits easily into the Iklip. Iklip fits well and without problems onto the microphone stand. Easy to adjust angle for viewing page. The only thing besides being overpriced and made from cheap plastic is that you can't rotate the device from portrait to landscape or landscape to portrait without removing your IPad from the Iklip and removing a screw take it apart rotate it and then put the screw back in, and your iPad back on the Iklip. I made a little device that allows a quick one hand flip for what ever direction you want to view? Maybe I will patent it and overprice it.

Ok for a cheaper holder but don't use with iPad 2,

I bought this directly from the manufacturer last January. It worked ok with the original iPad. It isn't very flexible so you've got to be sure to get it in just the right spot on the mic stand in order to tilt it properly. Also, note that you are supposed to slide the ipad in through the top (as defined by the picture with this listing. Obviously, if you tilt the klip the wrong way, the iPad could slide out. If I needed another holder and only had an original iPad and $30 I'd consider buying again. Overall, however, my impression is "ok" but not great.
If you have an iPad 2 --- DON'T BUY THIS HOLDER. I recently got an iPad 2 (the original iPad was actually my wife's but she let me borrow it for that January gig). The iPad 2 is too small for this holder as mentioned in the description. I've contacted the makers of iKlip three times since I got the iPad 2 asking for an update on a new iKlip. Each time they said, "we're working on it. Just keep checking our web-site." No timeline or offer to notify me. You can get it to fit very carefully but you are not very bright if you try. Apparently, I'm not very bright. I used it at a practice a last weekend. I stretched a rubber band across the sides to help hold in the iPad. Eventually, the bottom of the iPad popped out of the bottom bracket, slide out of the stand fell to the floor and was dented on the mic stand leg. Stupid me!! No more waiting for an iKlip. I discovered The Gig Easy (Google it). This holder is more expensive but the design looked much better. I ordered it on Thursday and it arrived on Saturday (yesterday). It is of excellent quality. The arms are spring loaded so they pull out a bit to insert the iPad and then squeeze the iPad to keep it from falling out. It is fully rotatable in all directions and extremely solid. It can screw to the top of a mic stand or with the optional bracket (which I bought) attach to the mic stand and hang off the side. If you are a musician who'll be gigging a lot with your iPad, you really should consider investing in the GigEasy. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, I don't think it is available on Amazon yet. Added: 4/17/2011 - I traded emails with the developer today. He said they are working to get GigEasy on Amazon. Don't be scared off by the price. The quality really shows.

This thing is great. It's sturdy, reasonably easy to attach and remove to mic stands, reasonably priced, etc.My only complaint is that there is no easy way to switch between portrait and landscape without disassembling the iKlip.

Works, but...,

As other reviews have said, the iKlip isn't engineered very well. It does not clamp onto the iPad 2 (and presumably the 1st generation iPad, since they both have the same area dimensions). I have it in landscape mode, and there is a good 7mm gap between the top of the iPad and the 2 top clamps of the iKlip. So it basically is cradled only by the bottom and right-side clamps, with no top support whatsoever. I would have preferred a 3-sided clamp, which would be far more secure than the current scheme, which easily allows the iPad to be knocked out.
I'd recommend waiting for new products.

I was talked into buying this at a music store as it was the only iPad mic stand mount they had. It has a sliding, clipping mechanism that needs to go onto the rod part of a mic stand or other slim pole. It isn't big enough to fit on the larger shaft part of the stands I have and is a little too big for clamping onto the skinny boom end. Therefore, you end up with limited options for placement. For me that was the lower part of the boom or on the extended part of the stand (shown in description of the item). The weak point of the mount is one sheet metal screw that you screw into plastic that holds the clamp mount onto the iPad holding part. I feel real uneasy putting a $500+ iPad2 out on the end of that. Mine came with the iPad2 adapters and they are fine. Overall it works but I don't really trust it and the limited mounting options limits the ways you can use it. I ended up buying ANOTHER one that mounts on the end of a mic stand and felt a lot more solid. Because it is on the end of the mic stand you can use the entire flexibility of the mic stand to move it around. Of course, you now can't put a mic on the mic stand as it has turned into an iPad2 stand. Given the limitations of mounting position I wouldn't use it on the same stand as a mic anyway. Bottom line, mine is going to be unused. I wasted my money. Maybe the limits work within your usage.

Not great. OK if you want to always mount your iPad 2 in portrait on a vertical stand but beware big time if you want to mount it in landscape as any significant tilt to the open side of the mount will cause the iPad to fall out!Now I don't want my iPad to be smashed on the floor so this is going back.

IKlip review,

Well, at 30+ dollars, it isn't cheap. It's made out of plastic so it can't travel while attached to the stand for fear of breaking. I use the IPad2 and it is 7 1/4 across yet this holder is 7 1/2 so it doesn't hold the IPad2 tight. It doesn't go from Landscape to Portrait without a complete disassemble and reassemble. I expected a little more for my money. I would not recommend this model. I would recommend TabKeeper2 as the app for guitarists/singers. There has to be a better holder than this out there for the money. If anyone has a different model that they are thrilled with, let me know.

misleading - doesn't really work for ipad 2,

As soon as I got this and open the box it was clear what happened.... The iKlip is designed for the iPad 1, not the iPad 2, and they did a hasty mod to try to make it work with the iPad 2 and cut corners. The problem is the mod holds the sides fairly securely, but doesn't secure the bottom of the iPad at all, meaning if you're not paying attention it will slip out and come crashing down onto the floor. I can't imagine anyone being ok with that scenario! To me this seems like false advertising, and definitely colors my opinion of IK multimedia (whom i previously thought of as a good company). Two other minor complaints with this product. For one, I found it really inconvenient that you must permanently decide whether you want your iPad mounted in landscape or horizontal. My intended application for getting the iPad was to run a personal in-ear mix app (running in landscape), and a music/lyrics app for musicians (running in portrait). I would have liked to have known that the iKlip isn't able to do this before I purchased it. Secondly, when I was assembling the first iKlip, I didn't expect it to have such sharp edges and sliced my finger pretty good. It would be simple and inexpensive to give us consumers a little headsup on this, and it was adding insult to injury (literally) for me. I was considering buying the IK multimedia virtual instrument bundle awhile back, but if they can't get a $40 clip right, why should i spend big bucks on their software? Great idea, horribly executed! |
