5.0 out of 5 stars enhances a brilliant flight sim
This is an expansion: you still need to buy IL-2: Forgotten Battles. That being said, this appears to enhance the original FB; the graphics appear to be better and the AI (friendly as well as enemy) sharper. I've had pilot training and find this flight sim to have an accurate feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars enhances a brilliant flight sim, March 17, 2004
This review is from: IL2: Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack (CD-ROM)
This is an expansion: you still need to buy IL-2: Forgotten Battles. That being said, this appears to enhance the original FB; the graphics appear to be better and the AI (friendly as well as enemy) sharper. I've had pilot training and find this flight sim to have an accurate feel.

Your Eastern Front pilot careers now include French (Normandie sqdn), Romanian and Polish pilots, complete with their languages chattering on your radio during missions; same for Quick Missions, where, for instance, you can fly the Romanian IAR80 fighter to see how it performs, not simply fight it as a Soviet pilot. Same for assorted Italian and British aircraft that fought on the Eastern Front, including Fiat and Gladiator biplanes, which you can fly. Cockpits seem to be unique to each plane, not generic.

The FB: AEP expansion throws in a Normandy campaign (maps, careers) and even some Pacific stuff, though there the aircraft are limited (Japanese are limited to 2 models each of the Ki-84 and Zero fighter). It also includes exotica like the YP-80 jet and German (prototype, never flown) Go229 flying wing, so you now have a game that includes biplane fighters and jets, which covers the rapid progress of flight 1939-45 and, even if somewhat anacronistic in an Eastern Front sim, will still save you the price of some of the other flight sims and allow you more flight cross-training.

Still, if all you want is an improvement on a great flight sim -- Forgotten Battles -- this will add value and lifespan to it. If you're new to it and are interested in a realistic flight sim, get FB, get the AEP, and go to it. Disclaimers: You'll need strong computer speed and graphics, and I also recommend flight pedals (the CH model is a good one) to go with your joystick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly unique, July 30, 2004

What makes the IL-2 series unique is its ability to bring to light aircraft most people have never even heard of. Ever since the 8-bit color days, here have been sims depicting P-51's and B-17's. Frankly, I'm tired of them.

The Aces expansion pack really raises the bar, adding a number of realistically modelled aircraft that haven't seen the light of day in a sim. Examples include the Russian TB-3 Bomber carrying 2 I-16 fighers under its wings, the German FW-190/Ju-88 Mistel (a flying bomb), the Gloster Gladiator (Finnish J-8), German BF-110, Japanese Ki-48, and others.

The P-51 might be great for some, but give me a cannon-armed Lavochkin La-7 and we'll see who comes out on top.

5.0 out of 5 stars can it get any better?, May 29, 2004

If you like World War II aircraft simulations, look no further. There is none better. The aircraft handling is closest to flying a real WWII fighter or bomber as a arm chair jock can get. I fly real small aircraft, and the games stick inputs and responses are close to real as one can get from a computer game.

4.0 out of 5 stars IL-2 Ace Expansion Pack is worth the $, February 26, 2006

If you have IL-2 Forgotten Battles, then kick out the extra $ for the expansion pack! There is a noticable improvement in the AI of the computer controlled aircraft, and it has proved more challenging in dog-fights. You also need this expansion pack if you want to take it a step further and get Pacific Fighters. I have tried IL-2 as a stand-alone, which was good. Then with Aces EP it got better. Now, with Pacific Fighters, it breathes even more life into the game. If you are a flight simmer, I would recomend all three!

5.0 out of 5 stars What you need to know about this game, December 28, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: IL2: Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack (CD-ROM)
All Il2 fb's content (and tons more) is in the latest (and supposedly final) installment of the series...il2 fb 1946. As of this writing, Dec 28 2006, Il2 fb 1946 is not available at Amazon... but it will be showing up quite soon I think. It is out in Europe already (Amazon.uk has it). This is a great game. It has been around awhile and is _still_ miles ahead of other war flight sims. It is _not_ particularly user friendly. There's a lot to learn and the game does not hold your hand much. The chess-playing nerdy techy World War II obsessed kid/man will be challenged and in heaven, others be warned. Basic web-search will lead you to lots of user generated content, support and extras. There is a large enthusiastic community of il2 players who gather in online squadrons (the pilot version of clans). Multiplayer is excellent and quite active, but not via Ubisoft multiplayer (the game's default multiplayer option). You need the (free to download) third party program Hyperlobby.sk Hope to see you in the crosshairs. JG27_Pyth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, A Revolutionary Flight Simulator, December 10, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: IL2: Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack (CD-ROM)
After the failure of CFS3, I was looking for a brand new game that could hopefully take away the bitterness of Microsoft publishing a game that is not worthy of a buy. After looking for a few years, I came across IL2 Sturmovik, and since then I've been hooked. The graphics for this game are state of the art, flight models are accurate, and the fun that can be experienced in the intensity is like going on a wild ride. It's a great game for single player, but the multiplayer fails. You must download this and then this to get a server list. Oops! Looks like you didn't download this. Please go back and sit there for 4 hours waiting for another download to complete. We're sorry, we were unable to process your request for a server list. Very, very buggy, not worth the account or any of the wasted time (typical of Ubisoft). Get the game, avoid the multiplayer.

I bought this item for my son-in-law and he is highly delighted with it. He said it was one of the best expansion kits he had had and is especially pleased because it is realistic and historically accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost real, May 29, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: IL2: Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack (CD-ROM)
This combat flight sim is about as real as you can get without feeling the G-Forces and taking real damage. You can really get into this game and before you know it, hours and hours have gone by before you realize it's time to take a break. If this game doesn't get your adrenealin going, nothing will. WOW!
