2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Try September 7, 2013

You can tell that an effort was made in creating this car game, but there are way better ones. Real Racing 3 is free and pretty fun, and Asphalt 8 is awesome for only $0.99.

Pros:
+ Good Graphics
+ Smooth Gameplay
+ Detailed Tracks
+ No IAPs
+ Only One Permission

Cons:
- Really Slow Progression
- Extremely Limited Car Selection
- Difficult Controls
- $0.99 (Usually - I got it as a FAOTD)
- Boring/Dull

Bottom Line: An okay FAOTD. There are way better racing games though.

(Note: If you found my review to be unhelpful, please tell me why so I can improve in the future. I try my best to make my reviews as helpful as possible. Thanks!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, flawed execution September 7, 2013

First of all I'd like to say that this game looks great. Graphics are detailed and realistic.

The "tilt screen" method of steering your car feels almost like using a steering wheel, and I think was a nice game mechanic. The problems with steering are two-fold. First, there is no tutorial to explain how it's done. Only by stumbling around through the options screen was I able to finally figure out how to steer the car. Second, the steering is far too sensitive and far too slow to recover when you return your "wheel" to straight ahead. For a game that you aren't going to devote your life to mastering, it needs to be a bit more simple for the player to succeed.

Next, there is a MAJOR bug in the game. It often decides that you are going the wrong way on the track when you are definitely going in the correct direction on the track.

Devs: Tweak the steering and get rid of the bug and I could give your game five stars. As it sits I probably won't even load it again.

For free, if you like car racing games I'd definitely give this a try.

I played this game on a Kindle 8.9 HD, and encountered only the issues noted above.

For a racing fan, this is a good game. Unfortunately, there are a few things I dislike about the game.

Graphics 5/5: Graphics are great. I don't remember the old days, but I'd say these graphics are pretty similar to GT3 (but it doesn't have nearly the same content).

Controls 5/5: This is a racing game on a smartphone/tablet. Many people will criticize it here because it is a little difficult to start, but for racing enthusiasts, I think they will figure it out soon. I tried the tilt controls for two races, didn't like it, switched to the buttons, and was decently happy. Again, this is not as refined as console controls, but I was happy with it.

Sound 3/5: You know when you're accelerating and braking, but the music was pretty bland (low bitrate). This is something that can be improved but no stars removed for this.

Gameplay 2/5: This is where I have beef with the game. First off, you MUST complete the challenges to continue the game. You start on challenge 1 and there appears to be 30. Sounded fine to me. However, after beating the first challenge, you replay the EXACT same map with different specifications: beat this car this time. Okay, that's fine, I'll do it once again. Now, I'm on challenge 3 and it's the EXACT SAME MAP AGAIN. I don't want to race the same map (and two laps instead of one), for three challenges in a row. I didn't unlock any of the new cars or any of the new maps. Let me race something else. I stopped here and decided to write a review because I don't want this to continue on for 5 challenges (and because while holding down the right arrow my car veered off to the left and caused me to lose the challenge. I am on the new Nexus 7 though, so I won't blame the developer).

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring with crap controls September 7, 2013

The title sums it up. Racing games always seem like fun until you play them. Gets an extra star for graphics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too hard, physics not accurate September 7, 2013
Verified Purchase
I'm a very casual gamer, but this looked like a fun app to try.

I can't get past the very first time trial! The physics of the game aren't true. It's hard to drive straight through the narrow gates, the car spins out or goes incredibly slow on the grass. (My device might play into this as well.)

I was looking for a game I could play in my spare time, but I do not want to be stuck on the first level of a game for a long time, trying to figure out how to adapt to the physics of this game.

The developer would be wise to give stars or something, so that very casual gamers and kids can unlock levels, but experienced gamers can be challenged to beat their own scores.

I'm uninstalling. :-(

3.0 out of 5 stars I Didn't Get Far with the Kazoo Sounding Engine May 13, 2014
Verified Purchase
I didn't even get past the first race. I played it 6 times, never finished the course once, trying to find a comfortable, responsive steering mechanism (keeping on the dirt track proved beyond my capabilities). Best I found was the slider steering, but even then... ugh, the engine sound, like I had a barrel full of Florida Everglades-grade mosquitoes under the hood.

For a .99 cent, IAP free, minimal permissions, minimal frills racer, POCKET RALLY is decent I suppose. The developer had updated the sensitivity and content recently, but frankly Riptide GP2 is way cooler (but more expensive) in every aspect. For those looking for a cheap car racer that can be played offline, this game does look okay. I just couldn't get past the South African vuvuzela acceleration that pierced the air regardless of car I chose.
