Editorial Reviews

By now, folks buying Mindy McCready albums know what they're getting into. If McCready's far from a devastating singer, she's also far from incompetent, and when she has solid material like Matraca Berg's "All I Want Is Everything," this album's most traditional-country-flavored track, or the road song "Tumble and Roll," she's capable of enough emotional vigor to pull them off. Unfortunately, her third record lacks much in the way of memorable songs, and whereas her previous two outings hinted at a feminist edge, the 23-year-old McCready now strikes a conventional desperate-for-love vulnerability and often a pouting vocal style. Invariably, the weaker the tune, the more she resorts to cloying whispers and chirps. If I'm Not So Tough has any highlights, they're to be found in Glen Duncan and Larry Franklin's soulful fiddle breaks and Paul Franklin's tasty pedal steel, which, to McCready's credit, are given plenty of room to roam. --Roy Kasten

1.0 out of 5 stars Still cheering.... September 24, 1999
Format:Audio CD
Mindy McCready continues her downhill spiral with her third album, "I'm Not So Tough". After a small quality drop from "Ten Thousand Angels" to "If I Don't Stay the Night", "I'm Not So Tough" I fear is going to be pasted over by Country radio and listeners. The only song that stands out is 'Over and Over', while songs like "Lucky Me" belong a broadway musical soundtrack. The songs sound a lot alike and I am unable to warm to it. Don't get me wrong I am still cheering for Mindy, but if I were her I would shop for a new record label. Not only did they point her in the wrong direction musically there was very little publicity promoting the new album. Hopefully she will be able to recover from this devastating new release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album by Mindy McCready December 15, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I have all of Mindy McCready's albums, but I must say that "I'm Not So Tough" is the best one of the three! The songs are awesome and her voice is so beautiful. I especially like the catchy tune "All I Want Is Everything." The only reason I didn't give this album five stars was the fact that a lot of the songs have the same tune and sort of resemble each other. However, overall it is a wonderful, solid album. I would definitely recommend buying it, especially if you own her two previous albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD of 1999 March 23, 2000
By Dave
Format:Audio CD
Mindy McCready never ceases to amaze me. She hand-picked the songs for this album and did an altogether stellar job. The best song on the album is "Take Me Apart," a sassy number. She has touching ballads, such as "Hold Me" and "Dream On," as well as a poppy, "Over and Over," which would have been a huge hit if it had been released to radio. "I'm Not So Tough," "Thunder and Roses," and "Lucky Me" are also among the smart, heart-felt songs that make this album a total success.

4.0 out of 5 stars She's back November 5, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I've always loved Mindy, but even I can say that her second CD was lacking.....however, her third one shows that she is on her way again. Though it may not have the awesome lyrics of her first CD, it has tons of emotion. Mindy's voice has diffinently matured. This CD shows her many talents.....almost like a different voice with each song. Songs such as "Thunder and Roses", "Over and Over" and "I'm Not So Tough" will keep the record in your CD player. For any Mindy fan, this CD will remind you of why you feel in love with her the first time.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst album this year September 17, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I liked Mindy's work since the beginning with "Ten Thousand Angels" You would expect an artist to get better with each new album. This is not the case with Mindy McCready. I have tried listening to CD over and over and can not get into it. I don't understand how she pick such awful songs. Her voice is gorgeous and should be used on better songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'm not so Tough" May 23, 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent album. There's something for everyone. It's a bit out of order but it's actually a chronology of love. The beginning, the middle, nearing the end, the end, starting over w/ baggage and so on. "I'm not so tough" is the starting over w/ baggage song which really is an anthem to men. It says, "I may have walls but if you give me chance I'll let you inside." "Tumble and Roll" is the middle. "All I want is everything" is the post breakup anthem when you're tired of hurting but want the fairy tale because its safe and unattainable. "Two different things" is the break up. "Dream On" is the song for when you've fallen in love but it's time to say goodnight or like someone else referred the long distance love has to go home. "I've got a feeling" is the anticipation of being with the one which you've fallen in love. "Thunder and Roses" is the dance of dating before you find a lasting love. "Over and Over" is when you just realize you are falling in love and you can't get enough of being with this new person. When the past is forgotten and the now is all that there is. "Lucky me" is one of the bads before the good when you just want to throw in the towel. "Hold me" is when you've been in a relationship for a while and you need the tender touch of love. It's about making things feel better and not taking each other for granted. "Take me apart" is when you first meet someone and you want them to take a chance. So my only complaint about the album is the lack of chronology. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars MINDY DESERVES MORE CREDIT ! June 3, 2000
Format:Audio CD
WHY BNA RECORDS HAD ISSUES WITH THIS ALBUM IS BEYOND ME. MINDY SHOULD GET SO MUCH MORE RESPECT IN THE BUSINESS, AND THIS ALBUM SAYS WHY.
THIS RECORD IS FULL OF CATCHY MELODIC TUNES AS WELL AS SOME AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL BALLADS. HER VOICE SHINES ON THIS RECORD LIKE NO OTHER. "DREAM ON" AND "THUNDER AND ROSES" PROVES THAT, AND WHEN YOUR READY FOR THE TOE TAPPIN, "TUMBLE AND ROLL" AND "ALL I WANT IS EVERYTHING" WILL TAKE CARE OF THOSE NEEDS.
THIS IS TRULY A UNIQUE SOUNDING RECORD, WITH IT'S MANY POP SONGS WITH COUNTRY OVERTUNES IT ALSO HAS A GRITTY EDGE WHICH HELPS THE RECORD PACK A PUNCH.
ALL EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT IS HER OUTSTANDING DEBUT RECORD "TEN THOUSAND ANGELS" BUT "I'M NOT SO TOUGH" IS A RECORD THAT SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MUCH MORE.
SINCE HER PARTING WAYS WITH BNA AND THIS RECORD NOT GETTING MUCH ATTENTION, IT TRULY IS A GEM THAT YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTICE OF. CAPITOL RECORDS OF NASHVILLE WHO HAS JUST SIGNED HER MADE A GREAT DECISION.
MINDY IF YOUR OUT THERE YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF THIS RECORD, AND HOPE YOU COME VISIT US IN CHICAGO.
