Editorial Reviews

In the hundred-year-plus history of aviation, truly radical new aircraft designs come along only once in a generation, and since the early 1970s, there has been very little new in the skies... that is, until now. Soaring onto the passenger airline scene are the "game changing" Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A380.

See how a century of aviation trial and error, and some of the seminal airplanes of the 20th century influenced the design of the Dreamliner. You'll thrill at the flight of a few of these legendary airplanes in some of the most breathtaking sequences ever seen. You will see the first public flight of the massive, but super efficient Airbus A380 at the 2007 Paris Air Show and the first flight of the smaller, even more efficient 787, the first-ever carbon fiber airliner that made its maiden flight in 2009. This unique cinematic experience shows how the 787 might affect the next 100 years of aeronautical design.

With the expansion of the 3-D DVD market, one noticeable trend is that films created specifically for the IMAX format are becoming more prevalent. Those starved for 3-D options have got a lot of choices available courtesy of IMAX from great (The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti) to painful (Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia and Ultimate G's: Zac's Flying Dream) to those in between (Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs). Before I break "Legends of Flight" down, I will say this film utilizes 3-D to greater affect than any other IMAX presentation that I've seen. But that's not all I look for--I want it all! I want a film that is attractive to look at, that incorporates great 3-D, and has an entertainment value within its narrative. "Legends of Flight" balances the three to varying success in its 42 minutes but undeniably succeeds as a visual treat.

Narrative: If you have an interest in aviation or aviation technology, then this film should be a slam dunk for you! No questions asked--just buy it now. If that subject does not peak your enthusiasm, I'll expand a bit. The film chronicles work on a couple of Boeing's most contemporary planes--the immense Airbus A380 and the glider-like 787 Dreamliner. With frequent shots in the construction warehouse and animated schematics of the plane's layout and structure--sections of the narrative seem a bit dry to a casual observer. But the film is also bolstered by the introduction of several classic planes from the past--and when we fly with these creations, the film soars. In fact, every time we're in the air--this is glorious entertainment. Visually arresting at all times, the film was interesting if not exceptional entertainment from a content perspective.

Features: While I am no great fan of the making-of featurette, the film DVD provides a 24 minute look behind the scenes. As the movie was so exquisitely shot, it is interesting to see how those sequences were captured on film. The sophisticated filming techniques make this better than average. Add a few trailers for other IMAX products and that's it for added content.

3-D: I know, it's all anyone cares about. I'm calling it--this is easily the best 3-D I've seen in a presentation of the sort. We actually fly with about six different aircraft over snow covered mountains, oceans, and green valleys. It is incredibly beautiful and looks unbelievable as layered, naturalistic 3-D. Unlike many other films, you can see that this was designed for 3-D. The film is also populated by vibrantly colored graphics that explode off the screen. And there are some animated flying creatures that soar past your eyes. One sequence showcases these manufactured animals flying across a real landscape and the result is stunning (even if some of the animation is slightly creepy). Some people don't like this computer generated 3-D imagery, so beware if that's your particular pet peeve. From start to finish, the film incorporates 3-D into its presentation and you simply can't be disappointed. With 5 star Natural 3-D, 4 star computer generated 3-D, and 4 star narrative--it is one of the better choices on the home market. I wish there had been more Legends flying though! KGHarris, 6/11.

1.0 out of 5 stars Giant Ad for the Boeing 787 September 7, 2011
Format:Blu-ray
I am an Aviation Nut and was first attracted to this movie at a local 3D display to sell 3D TVs. I was impressed with the excerpts and shots of the glider. I bought the movie and start following the story. It's not about legends; it's about bringing the Boeing 787 to life. The technical content is lame and disjointed. Unrealistic shots of Computer Animated Airplanes plague the movie. Gimmicky 3D wire animations models are shoved at the audience for the sake of 3D and not telling the story. Even as a documentary of telling the Boeing 787 story, it lacks real character and feeling. Leave this Blu-Ray/DVD on the shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars New IMAX for Aviation Enthusiasts June 4, 2011
By Azyiu
Format:Blu-ray
The overall PQ is great for this IMAX film, and those CG'd planes look great! They look so detailed and good, thought I kind of knew they were CG'd the first time I watched this; I kept trying to convince myself those are actual planes... having said that, I wish those in the sky (like the Super Constellation) are the real things instead. Barring a few shots I thought could've angled better, this film is pretty damn good overall.

I thought this was about the iconic planes of the past. Turns out about the B787, A380 and how we learned to design these machines from studying a bird. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and worth watching
This was a good overview on how Boeing created an airplane from its original inception to final testing. I learned a lot.

1.0 out of 5 stars why 3D?
I was hoping this movie would show cool inflight scenes, nothing, it was about the design and build of airplanes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly as advertised
More or less a Boeing 787 Dreamliner commercial, although a few soaring scenes that showcase the 3 D effects.
Maybe this DVD should be re-titled, since it is a bit misleading?
