Editorial Reviews

This Blu-ray disc will play on standard Blu-ray players & 3D Blu-ray players. To watch this movie in Blu-ray 3D, you will need a 3D-capable television and a 3D-capable Blu-ray player.

In the hundred-year-plus history of aviation, truly radical new aircraft designs come along only once in a generation, and since the early 1970s, there has been very little new in the skies... that is, until now. Soaring onto the passenger airline scene are the ""game changing"" Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A380. See how a century of aviation trial and error, and some of the seminal airplanes of the 20th century influenced the design of the Dreamliner. You'll thrill at the flight of a few of these legendary airplanes in some of the most breathtaking sequences ever seen. You will see the first public flight of the massive, but super efficient Airbus A380 at the 2007 Paris Air Show and the first flight of the smaller, even more efficient 787, the first-ever carbon fiber airliner that made its maiden flight in 2009. This unique cinematic experience shows how the 787 might affect the next 100 years of aeronautical design.

With the expansion of the 3-D DVD market, one noticeable trend is that films created specifically for the IMAX format are becoming more prevalent. Those starved for 3-D options have got a lot of choices available courtesy of IMAX from great (The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti) to painful (Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia and Ultimate G's: Zac's Flying Dream) to those in between (Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs). Before I break "Legends of Flight" down, I will say this film utilizes 3-D to greater affect than any other IMAX presentation that I've seen. But that's not all I look for--I want it all! I want a film that is attractive to look at, that incorporates great 3-D, and has an entertainment value within its narrative. "Legends of Flight" balances the three to varying success in its 42 minutes but undeniably succeeds as a visual treat.

Narrative: If you have an interest in aviation or aviation technology, then this film should be a slam dunk for you! No questions asked--just buy it now. If that subject does not peak your enthusiasm, I'll expand a bit. The film chronicles work on a couple of Boeing's most contemporary planes--the immense Airbus A380 and the glider-like 787 Dreamliner. With frequent shots in the construction warehouse and animated schematics of the plane's layout and structure--sections of the narrative seem a bit dry to a casual observer. But the film is also bolstered by the introduction of several classic planes from the past--and when we fly with these creations, the film soars. In fact, every time we're in the air--this is glorious entertainment. Visually arresting at all times, the film was interesting if not exceptional entertainment from a content perspective.

1.0 out of 5 stars Giant Ad for the Boeing 787 September 7, 2011
I am an Aviation Nut and was first attracted to this movie at a local 3D display to sell 3D TVs. I was impressed with the excerpts and shots of the glider. I bought the movie and start following the story. It's not about legends; it's about bringing the Boeing 787 to life. The technical content is lame and disjointed. Unrealistic shots of Computer Animated Airplanes plague the movie. Gimmicky 3D wire animations models are shoved at the audience for the sake of 3D and not telling the story. Even as a documentary of telling the Boeing 787 story, it lacks real character and feeling. Leave this Blu-Ray/DVD on the shelf.

One thing I never understood about this Imax production is ..... Why if you have the real planes.... you use Cgd ones for the flight sequences ??, you miss the real stuff these legendary machines carry in them, the noise, the rivets, the cgd's are so perfect they lack....... LIFE ¡¡¡, no better than watching a NASCAR race on Disney's Cars movie ¡¡¡¡

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing November 2, 2011
When I saw this in theaters, I was hoping to see some kind of documentary discussing classic aircraft. Instead what I got was an advertisement for the new Dreamliner, which included Boeing ridiculing other aircraft designers. Do not waste your money with this film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boeing Commercial...That's All September 12, 2011
I was expecting the history of flight. I was expecting to see the great planes of the 20th Century. What I saw was a Commercial for the Boeing 787 Dream Liner. All hype for the long overdue plane. Save your money.Legends of Flight (IMAX)

3.0 out of 5 stars 3D Review by a 3D Connoisseur October 15, 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

There are about 35 out of screen effects that extend 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer.

UNFORTUNATLY, you will see even more than I counted. My count only includes the OOS effects that should be out of the screen. Let me explain; In this and some other IMAX films they over-do the 3D. Objects your brain knows are farther back in the scene, your eyes see them sticking OOS. A visual example would be; a table edge that just reaches the surface of the screen has an object sitting 3 foot back on the table - the table is not OOS but the object 3 foot back appears to stick out of the screen. This is not a desirable 3D effect.

16 OOS effects reached 25%, but if you count multiple instances of the same object in the same scene, retreating then reaching 25% again, the count would be about 30.

The best OOS effects start at 19:55. For 1 full minute, CG bees then butterflies then ducks fly in your room and at times reach a full 50% of the way between you and the screen. At 41:30 they make a second flight together for another 40 seconds.

There were 5 other instances where the 3D was so overdone, what I was seeing was more of a mess than a 3D effect.

Even with the 3D deficiencies, the low price of this movie and the long duration OOS flights of the CG bees, butterflies and ducks, I recommend adding this one to your collection.

*** The CG bees in flight ***
*** are a great wow factor ***

MY 3D RATING = GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

The 3D rating would only be (a 2 star) FAIR without the nice 50% effects.

Note: As far as the percentages go, everyone's eyes are different.
