Mr Garlic Review, September 26, 2010
This review is from: IMCG Mr. Garlic
Good price and works well. It's hard to clean after use. Parts of garlic seem to stay attached to the screen and you can't get to it easily.

I'd been salivating over the luxury garlic presses on amazon like the
Rösle 12782 Garlic Press and Kuhn Rikon, however had been holding off due to the cost. This afternoon, I found one of these Mr. Garlic's in our local thrift shop for only $2, so I picked it up figuring it would be an initial foray into experimenting with these presses at a lower price point.
The one I picked up had all the original packaging, and was in good shape, yet didn't have the "roll" sheath to take off cloves' skin, however this wasn't a problem for me as I'd just gotten the Zak Designs "E-Z Roll" for this purpose (from amazon, and which I can recommend:
Zak Designs E-Z-Rol Garlic Peeler, Red
The press itself was a disappointment. While it seemed solidly constructed, it was hard to use. You pack the peeled cloves into the cylinder, and then insert the large screw to force the garlic through the metal holes at the bottom. It takes quite a long time to screw the tamper down, and requires more and more force to do so, especially as you near the end. I can imagine quite a few individuals who would have trouble doing this--the less muscular, the elderly, etc. Even if you fill the tube up to capacity, very little expelled garlic falls into the holding cap/container, forcing one to scrape the contents off the metal screen. It also created a lot of juice, which ended up being wasted.
If a young strong cook on a real budget found this in a thrift shop for $2, it might be worth it for the time being. But at $15 plus shipping from amazon marketplace sellers, it would be poor value and I'd rather stick to mincing garlic with a good knife. The copy says garlic can be pressed and stored in the unit for a week, but I would not want to do so. Also, it is hard to clean. I think I'm gonna have to try the more expensive garlic presses soon.
The one nice thing about the packaging was it included a little booklet of recipes, including a cucumber salad with yogurt, and pork chops with kumquat. I don't know if this booklet is still included in the new ones. Mine says it's made in Greece.
