4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, nonthreatening way to teach basic English skills.
Each time I get a new Hispanic student with limited English proficiency, I purchase a copy of this book for him. My ESL students are all incarcerated men with various educational backgrounds. Even those students who have very limited skill in reading Spanish have found this book helpful. One student carried the removable fold-up phrase card in his pocket daily for a...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for use in public school!
As a public school teacher in Massachusetts, I find this book almost unusable. I make use of it only as outside-class reinforcement for Spanish speakers in my classes who need to acquire ONLY basic speaking skills quickly. Keep in mind, however, that the Spanish/English version contributes to a dependence on the student's first language, and its format & layout can be...

Even those students who have very limited skill in reading Spanish have found this book helpful. One student carried the removable fold-up phrase card in his pocket daily for a couple of months. I would not suggest using this text as the sole teaching material in a classroom setting, but it can serve as an invaluable teaching/learning aid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very concise and practical, November 18, 1998

This book is quite useful in teaching English, specially when you have to apply an express course. It can also be used to learn "by yourself"...I use it with Portuguese speaking students in Brazil, and though it is in Spanish, it is still clear enough to be used.

5.0 out of 5 stars English for Spanish Speakers, June 26, 2007
I have been using this workbook to tutor two young men. Their native langue is Spanish and while they do speak some English, they have never had any formal training in English. I like the book because the exercises are interesting and useful and the illustrations are very colorful. Many of the English words are written in Spanish also which I think has been very helpful to my students. Also, because I am a beginning Spanish student, we have a nice cross cultural experience which is a lot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars In My Opinion, the Best Beginning English Acquisition Lesson Plan, April 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I became familiar with the, "10 Minutes a Day" o "10 minutos al dia" series of beginning to learn a foreign language. I was teaching ESL to a group a Spanish-speaking employees at a medium-sized manufacturing plant. With a motivated, but very tired class, my usual methods of teaching ESL was not effective. And I was not successful in teaching the, "th" sound in English, my students continually pronouncing it as, "d". When I reviewed one of these books, I was immediately struck by the introduction of self-pronunciation available outside of class. When I used some of the examples during the first class that I used this book, my slowest student pronounced the "th" sound correctly. Further progress by my students throughout the class convinced me of the usefulness of this book.

I have used the Spanish version as my course book in Exploratory Spanish in order to develop my student's skills.

Exactly what I wanted! I've used the English-to-Spanish version of this book, and bought this for a struggling Latina friend. Nice format, and it was just what I was looking for.

This is very popular with our low level or non-literate students and an easy transition into English Language learning. Not only do the students prefer this in the classroom, most of them will purchase this for home study also. A good review for low to moderate learners.

What I like about this book is the fact they have pronunciation of English words written phonetically for Hispanic-speaking people. It also has a comparison of our alphabet/pronunciation and theirs.......on the same page.

I was first using it and pulled out homework from it, but my Mexican students liked it well enough to want one of their own. They find it very helpful, and I was pleased to find it on Amazon for them.

I bought this book so I could help a Spanish speaking lady in an assisted living home learn English. It will be a great tool for me to learn Spanish words as well as teach Maria the words in English.
