I have used the Equus 3100 which is an excellent tool and after comparing features between the 3040 and 3100, the 3040 adds live data feed and only misses the battery back up of the 3100. It works well and is easy to use, providing instant recognition of the code without having to refer to a book or the internet. I called Technical Sales at Equus prior to purchasing to find out the cable length of which I was advised was 72". Unfortunately, this is wrong as it is ~ 24" long. It could use to be about another foot longer, but no problems so far with the cars I've used this on. Like the other reviewer commented, the screen is not blue and it can be a little difficult to see in bright sunlight. Overall, it is a good tool and is a good value.

I'm giving their tool a solid 4 stars, but their website a big fat 1 star and their customer service ZERO stars. When you get to the Repair Solutions screen you don't get any information other than the estimated cost of the repair.

You seem to get some nice info on an Upgrade BUT, you have to upgrade EACH vehicle separately, so that $59.95 is for 1 vehicle over 12 months. If you have 4, like I do... well, do the math. And the video to show my repair was not for my vehicle, I have 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 and the video was for a late 90s Chevy S-10. The Chevy has only an evaporation canister while the Ram has an evaporation solenoid as well as a canister, so only the canister replacement was shown and it wasn't proper for the RAM.

The site does not state that the upgrade is for the one vehicle, I assumed it was an upgrade for the ACCOUNT, but, it isn't.

I called Innova and said that now that I know it's per vehicle that I wanted only the 1 month for the vehicle I tested and a refund of $40.00...

Customer support was insolent and said, sorry, no refunds on the service. I only want the one month since it was a specific vehicle for a specific problem and he just said , NO! I asked for his supervisor but I was told he was "out" and that he'd return my call... the call that never came.

Use the device and look it up repair suggestions via google/bing/etc search and do not give them a penny for their "solutions".

The Equus 3040 OBD2 Scan Tool is great. I immediately used it on my car and turned off the check engine light. I also used it on my truck and several friends' cars as well. It's simple and easy to use and displays the errors on the screen. Well worth the price!

I chose the 3040 because I wanted live data display as well as freeze frame data when the check engine light came on. I did not care for the record and playback from the 3130 model. So, the 3040 suited my needs. I was able to find out the cause of the check engine light in my car. I have used it in other cars and so far not issues. The only thing that I wish is that the connector cord would be a about a 12" longer.

I am unhappy that the screen is not blue. Instead it has a pale-faded greyish color. Very hard to see the LCD data--the LCD data looks blue instead of black. I have to put the screen close to my eyes to be able to see it. Unlike the 3030--which that screen is a nice dark blue and you can see it from for away the display and the black data LCD readout.

I tried contacting Equus thru their email support. It's been three business days and not a single response about it. So this also gives them even less star points for their lack of customer support.

All I want to know at this point if my unit is defective for not having a blue backlit screen--as they advertise. Do you want to see what it looks like? I uploaded the pictures of my unit to amazon.com, please loot at the two customer pictures that were uploaded recently today.

If I don't get a response soon, I may just return this item as defective.

    Update....

I phoned Innova customer support. They could not confirm if this screen should look like this on the 3040 model--I get angry when customer support isn't equipped with the right knowledge--agent (Michael something) was telling me this was a new device that he hasn't heard about yet. Since they didn't have one there to test, they offered I'd return it to them, they were planning on giving me an address so I can ship it at my expense. I asked them if they could pay for the shipping and also if they can send me a new unit before I ship them mine (I am buying a used car for my daughter and I am checking the data on the cars I have seen in various lots)--they refused--so that's bad for them, they don't treat their customers correctly.

This device worked well on both my F-150 truck and my Crown Vic auto. It displayed and CLEARED the check engine error on both vehicles. It is a nice tool to have, and it has already paid for itself by saving me a trip to the dealer to determine my problem. One downside, the reported on-line assistance provided as part of the purchase to make trouble shooting easier, was really not "there". A web site was present, but it does nothing to assist you - at all. That said, the device itself CLEARLY reports the error and that is what I needed. The fact that it can also clear errors - is also a plus, as some of the newer cars can actually throw an error code that will not allow you to continue driving. With this device you can temporarily clear that code and continue driving to safety. Otherwise you could risk being stranding on a remote cold road - a real threat during our long dark Alaskan winters. So I will ALWAYS have this device in my vehicle when I drive out of town.
Oh yeah, I also enjoyed the real time read out while I was driving - it displayed LOTS of data, some of it I did not understand, but it was still fun. PS-not sure why Amazon thinks I live in NC, I do not, I live in Alaska...Some winters I WISH I lived in NC - :~).
