Without reading the instructions I was able to fumble my way around and easily find the live data tools and check for trouble codes.

I bought this Innova 31603 for around $300 and actually expected a bit more functionality, than actually discovered. Device is simple in use, intuitive understandable interface, nice design, retrieve DTC, ABS, SRS on most cars up to 2011. List of supported vehicles provided, what is good. Problems I found: on my 2002 Venture device read ABS code C1235, and describe as Right Front Sensor problem, but after spending half a day working on this wheel without success, rechecked on Internet and found that C1235 belong to right REAR wheel, so, don't blindly trust description. Second: it won't erase abs codes, even it says "erased successfully". But generally, comparing to another scan tools I tested, this one is pretty good for automotive DIY-ers.

I was over overly satisfied. This scan tool allowed me to scan vehicles up to 2009. BMW, Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Honda,.... After I cleared the code, I was still able to retrieve the car information for the customer. Other tools such as Snap-on did not have the capabilities as this tool did. The Technical support for this item was very good. They answered everything they advertised on the tool. This is a review from me and my shop at Los Gatos Autocare in Los Gatos, Ca 95030

Well built tool, does what it says in the description. Wish it had software to run on the local computer and not just via the web.

Update 6/20/2013 - When I connected the tool to PC recently, it has downloaded firmware and program upgrade. It took 5-10 min to finish but everything went well. I am impressed this is much better than my prior experience with another Innova scanner.

I have mixed feeling about Free Repair Solutions website. Whatever is available there is of some value but it is really trying to subscribe you to the premium Paid services. I am not against paying for help, but there are many sites that provide you with suggested repair based on DTC. I do not know without any comparison if Repair Solutions is the best or the worst of them and if prices are comparable.

Update 04/26/13 - I have received an email informing of the available software upgrade to add Nissan/Infinity , Kia and Hyundai brands for free and German's for $99.
I will advise how this will install on my unit.

This is the new tool. I had 3160 for over 2 years and this one provides more functions and, what is even more important, covers more brands in OBD, ABS and body categories.
Works very well on a few vihicles I tried it on.
It is very easy to use similar to other Innova products but has more features and gets you better data especially with PC based module.
I have never had a reason to use software supplied with 3160. The software supplied with this product is actually useful. It is browser based but the data and the program runs on your computer. Not only it will print a report that you can hand to a customer but it will store the data for future retrieval. The scanner/software will pull Vehicle ID and some other information from the vehicle computer automatically so that you can follow up on recalls and such

Now why I do not give it 5 stars:
1.

The unit work well. It is easy to figure out. My only complaint is that the software that it uses to connect to the computer is a little clunky. I thought it would read the codes and explain to me the most common ways to fix the problems found, but it appears that option takes a member ship fee. I might as well subscribe to all data, although I haven't checked the price. Its a great addition to my tool box and has helped quite a bit in the month I've used it, just expected more help on narrowing down how to actually fix problems instead of their software having a "get your fix now" button that directs you the closest shop that can fix the issue. I kinda thought that was the whole idea behind getting a scanner is so you can fix your own problems! For the money though this model seems better built than the models for consumers and allows upgrades that are not available for consumers. Some are free, but some would pay for the scanner twice over.

I purchased this to use it professionally and also for my personal use. This is an excellent tool! It connects quickly and automatically to whatever communication protocol the vehicle is using. Gives a lot of information on domestic vehicles, and also gives you the generic diagnostic codes for any vehicles that aren't supported with enhanced data. I have even been able to get generic codes from Izuzu and Hino trucks with Diesel engines. I would definitely say you get your money's worth from this diagnostic scan tool.

I was hoping someone already had tested this unit with BMW but no luck. As soon as I get it I plan to buy the $99 Euro/Asia upgrade and test it on my 2008 BMW 335i to see how it works. The bimmer has a bad ABS Hydraulic unit. Let's see what happens! I do not own a Nissan/Lexus so I will not be able to advise you. I will post my results after I receive and upgrade the unit; it could be while as I did not use priority shipping. I was going to list what BMWs the upgrade covers but since I can not personally validate each vehicle and year I will instead suggest you call Innova sales and get the list for yourself. Unfortunately I could not find the upgrade coverage on their website; might be smart to put a link to them on the upgrade page/brochure Innova. The person I talked with was very helpful and sent me 4 pdf documents covering the Asian ABS, European ABS, Asian SRS, and European SRS upgrade.

More to come in a couple of weeks...
