Review

I've mentioned before about this author... she is compared to Harry Potter or Twilight, and while I agree the genres are similar, the writing has a darker undertone and her protagonists usually have much more depth. -- Candy's Raves

If you'd told me two years ago that I'd be reading books that were not only young adult, but full of paranormal characters, I'd have called you crazy. But I got sucked in ... Now I'm hooked. Integration has only set the hook deeper. -- BigAl's Books & Pals

If you'd told me two years ago that I'd be reading books that were not only young adult, but full of paranormal characters, I'd have called you crazy. But I got sucked in by reading the first of Imogen Rose's Portal series, which convinced me young adult didn't mean a grandparent was too old to enjoy it. It snuck in a small dose of the paranormal, so I was open to giving it a try when she started a series that was definitely paranormal. Now I'm hooked. Integration has only set the hook deeper.

The Bonfire Academy series is a prequel to The Bonfire Chronicles, which currently has only one book, Faustine. Integration bridges the time from the end of Initiation to the start of Faustine. The focus is largely on Cordelia, although many of the students are returning, including one in particular who generates much of the book's conflict. Some new characters also make their first appearances and shake things up.

I'm always impressed by Rose's ability to introduce and integrate new characters in an ongoing series and to craft an engrossing story, which is aptly demonstrated here. But what struck me as I was reflecting on Integration was that she's done a first class job of world building without me realizing it. When I think of a typical book in the fantasy or science fiction genres, I expect a large part of that will be describing a world that is much different than anything in real life, while having enough aspects of the real world for us to be able to relate. While Rose's world exists on the same planet we live on and sometimes her characters visit that world, I realized that what she has done with the Bonfire Academy series is created a world that is just as foreign to the world I live in as a story taking place on Planet X. None of the characters are 100% human.

A great follow up to the first book Initiation. I honestly love Cordelia, she is a princess who is beautiful and has so much going on for herself, and oh yeah she changes into a monsterous looking demon who has pus oozing out of her. No big deal..

Bonfire isn't a normal school. Its a school for a select few paranormal creatures, and it helps them migrate into the human world without causing problems and how to interact with other creatures. When I first read Initiation I really wasn't sure I was going to like Cordelia, she didn't seem like a character I could relate too, but I was so wrong. As soon as she took on being Faustine's mentor she seemed to grow in my eyes and I loved her loyalness. Now we all know me I love my books to have lots of romance, but in this series I love seeing how close Cordelia and Faustine are. There is some romance but the 2 girls and all the crazyness that happens to them is really more the main focus.

Another awesome thing about this book that if you like YA but kinda get burned out on it this series is like right in the middle. Its not too YA but not Adult either.

I am eagerly waiting for book 3 after this books ending. It was a major cliffhanger. I am not complaining but man I need the next book now. This series is great. I love all the action, the mystery and there is always a surprise thrown in there. Its a series any paranormal fan will want to check out!

This series is fabulous! Some serious demon-fairy-witch-vampire-trolly-shifter goodness!!!! I have thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of all these paranormals & their abilities. Not to mention all the excitement & trouble they get in & out of. :) I can only imagine the fun it would be to attend another year at the academy! (I say another, because I feel like I was right there with them through it all while reading Initiation & Integration.) ;) Here's hoping Imogen Rose brings us more of her Cordelia, Faustine, & Jagger greatness very soon, because I'm sure I'll need a Jagger fix! ;*}

Imogen Rose has done it again. I have never been so engrossed in a series as I am when it comes to this series. I love everything about it and am always left wanting more. The writing is just amazing and she gets you so invested in the characters that you don't want to leave this amazing world. We start this book off by entering back into the awesome world that is Bonfire Academy. We are greeted again by Cordelia who is now actually a faculty member at the Academy and working as an apprentice for Professor Bern. She also gets to help continue to mentor Faustine. Once again I am amazed by just how powerful and cool Cordelia is. She is truly a force to be reckoned with. She is brave,strong and compassionate. The relationship she has with Faustine is so real and like a real big sister little sister relationship.

Cordelia and Faustine unfortunately have to deal with the fact that someone is trying to hurt the demon princesses. They start receiving haiku's that spell out danger. I loved the fact that the haiku's were so brillantly written and fit in so well with the story. They added the right about of mystery. Cordelia also has to come to grips about her syncing with Jagger and has to let go of Mason. I have to say my heart broke along with Quinn's when she broke up with him even though her and Jagger are meant to be. Cordelia finds that after that breakup things get really interesting and she suddenly has a lot going on. The biggest issue is trying to find out who is after the girls.

Faustine has really grown up and it was great seeing her going through her integration program to try to control her powers. She has a major slip up through that leads to some unforeseen events. The results of this action lead to Faustine really having to learn how to control herself.
