Book Description

Bertha Maude Anderson has no inkling of how famous she will become. She lives in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina in the year 1843. Her world changes forever when she is enticed to join The Romanoff Brothers Circus and her name is changed to Inzared, Queen of the Elephant Riders. Inzared discovers her true calling while learning to live with the nomadic Gypsies. From the hatred shown by some of the performers to the love she finds along the way, Inzared finds herself immersed in the rich folklore and customs of the misunderstood people who call the circus their home. Her one constant is Cecil, the elephant, and together they form a bond that no one can break as Inzared finds herself lured into the world of the Gypsies while clinging to her own roots and trying to break free of the chains that keep her from her destiny.

5.0 out of 5 stars REFRESHING HISTORICAL FICTION August 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
In 1840, a lonely, young Appalachian girl jumps at the chance to join a traveling circus troupe. She immediately falls in love with the show's main attraction, an African elephant named Cecil. Cecil and his trainer, Paytre, quickly fall in love with her, too. Paytre renames the girl, Inzared. Riding high on Cecil's back, Inzared finds her niche among the gypsies. Although Inzared and Paytre's sweet love affair is endearing, their happiness is wrapped in a shroud of mysterious, reoccurring events. While Inzared polishes her act, she finds acceptance by most of the gypsy clan, but not all. Blinded by true love and determined to learn the gypsy way of life and make Paytre proud of her, she pushes away the nagging warning signs that tug at her heart. When tragedy strikes, she awaits the next act.

The author portrays a refreshing look at the lives of nineteenth century European immigrants and their hardships. Their superstitions combined with the struggle for survival lay out a path of intrigue that lingers on the pages and keeps the reader interested. I could see the vivid hues of the performers' costumes, hear the lion's roar and the cheering crowd under the Big Top. I could feel the passion of Inzared's love and the agony of her heartbreak. I look forward to hearing more from Queen of the Elephant Riders.

Great historical fiction. I didn't want it to end. It captured me from the beginning and held me to the end. I was enchanted with all of the characters and could hear the laughter and applause of the circus.

Wow! This excites both the senses and the emotions. I became one with the circus and Inzared and love the historical detail. This story of a courageous young girl is an inspiration as well as an exciting ride though the many turns in her life. Buy a ticket. You won't regret it.
