Product Description

The GVE200 DVI-D Video Extender allows you to extend the distance between the computer system unit and the display unit by up to 65 feet. It accomplishes this by means of a local transmitting unit and remote receiving unit connected by standard solid Category 5 twisted pair Ethernet cable (or Cat 5e and Cat 6). The GVE200 Video Extender System is ideal for factory and construction sites, or any installation where the display needs to reside in a harsh setting, but you want the system equipment kept in an environmentally friendly location. The Extender System is also useful for control and security purposes, where you can have the system unit in a secure area at the same time that you put the display in an area that is convenient for viewing.

It does work with a cat6 cable at desktop lengths (3-6 feet), but why wouldn't I just buy a DVI cable then?

I called customer support and they said it's a known issue - this product does not currently work with any sort of adapters.

IOGear has been purchased by ATEN, and they discontinued their own adaptors, and replaced it with the ATEN product.

I use this item to replace an analogue VGA cable from a PC at the back of a church to the projector near the front, about 100ft. I installed a (550MHz rated) CAT6 UTP cable to wall mounted CAT6 rj45 keystone sockets. I also used CAT6 cabling from the wall to the projector and wall to computer, including CAT6 RJ45 plugs. Note that CAT6 RJ45s are specified as introducing about 1/12 of the noise of CAT5. I've been making up cables for over 25 years, so in most people's estimations, I'd like to think I'm at least competent.

The projector is 1024x768@60Hz max and at that resolution everything works fine. The DVI cable produces a more definite image with noticeably better contrast, as one would expect on a digital link. (While installing, I temporarily used a piece of CAT5e between the computer and the wall, which introduced some interference, so my recommendation would definitely be for good quality CAT6 cable. Typical interference with this system seems to be certain colours get a vertical stripe of sparkle, for want of a better description.)

The devices are powered by +5v (pin 14, pin 15 GND) of the DVI port and will only transmit digital signals. Don't expect any kind of analogue adapter to work. An HDMI adapter could work (since it also provides +5v), but I've not tried it, don't expect remote control via the CEC or the HDMI v1.4 Ethernet channel to work. If it did work, the max length would probably be reduced due to the extra adapter connections.

There is no passing of EDID information between the two ends (no DDC channel), so the adapter announces a wide range of supported resolutions to the PC. You need to configure your computer for one that is appropriate for your monitor.

Just plug ONE UTP cable at both ends and you can go up to 1920 x 1080. But there a few things you have to have in mind.

- As someone mentioned here, it has to be ONE an only ONE SOLID UTP cable CAT 5, CAT 5e, CAT 6 or CAT 6a cable, so no patch cords or wall sockets for this one.

- You have to get high quality cable, no Chinese cheap UTP for this one. I tried with on old high quality UTP CAT5 3 meter cable a would get 1920x1080 with no problem, tried a 20 meter generic Chinese CAT 5e cable would only get 800x600 with funny colors and image loss, tried a 20 meter generic Chinese SOLID CAT 6 will only work up to 1440x900, tried with a Branded high quality 20 meter SOLID CAT 6a Cable and 1920x1080 again with no problem. NOTE: all those cables "work" with no problem on the computer for internet and LAN connection.

So button line if you want 1920x1080 at 30 m (100 ft.) with no headaches you WILL need a High Quality Branded SOLID CAT 6a Cable.

The product works as advertised. I'm running it on an older EDTV at 480p and 800x600 resolutions. Some odd resolutions such as 848x468 (a resolution my Nvidia card tried to use) did cause some glitches to appear on the screen. It seems that you need to stick with normal HDTV resolutions.

The caveats are that this product will not work correctly unless you connect it through ONE (1) CAT5 or CAT6 cable. I have CAT6 network cables pulled throughout my house that terminate in a closet. Connecting this product through the patch panel in the closet and the jack in the living room did not work. I had to take the patch panel and jack out of the run and just terminate each end to a male RJ45. This basically ment that I had a long (~150') CAT6 cable between each end of the extender.

Just something to keep in mind if you are planning to using this with existing home/commercial wiring.

20ft with Cat6 driving my 1280x800 projector, no problem. I did not WANT a bulky cable, or two cables; just one (for travel). I concur with what another reviewer said re. adapters (they will introduce reflections), and suspect you need to use really good cable (Cat6+), but also MAKE SURE conductors are 24AWG or better (lower number) else your signal loss ("attenuation") will be too great. This thing is what-it-is. If you don't expect too much from it, it works great. But 1080 at 100ft? Doubtful! If you need that, follow advice of other reviewer(s) and get an active device.

For those of you having problems, it says in the instructions (although it's easy to miss) to use sold-core wire, not stranded. Typically, most patch cables are stranded conductor to allow for frequent repositioning of the cable without fatigue. Non-patch cable (i.e. bulk cable) usually uses solid core. There are some solid-core patch cables out there and that's what you need to look for. I had issues with stranded, and everything was resolved when I switched to solid.

"Raygo" makes some good solid-conductor patch cables.... If the patch cable does not say "solid" conductor, or it says nothing at all, it's most likely stranded.

Re:IOGear DVI-D CAT5e/6 Mini Extender GVE200 (Black)IOGear DVI-D CAT5e/6 Mini Extender GVE200 (Black)

I have perfect top of the line cat6 cable and this thing wont work as advertised. If you are ok with 640x480 than it's for you. Otherwise, if you are going over 20feet, buy an active device. This is just a passive terminated differential plug. If there are any adapters inline( which I didn't have ), you'll get( and expect ) reflections that render the signal useless. I don't know why they advertise the resolutions they do. The only cable the worked at the advertised max resolution was about 5feet. Pissed me off. I spent good money on this hoping to get the job done. At least amazon is cool on returns.
