No panacea,

I bought this mouse based on a glowing review in Network World magazine, in the immortal words of John Lennon, "I shoulda known better".
My hope was the "30x more accurate tracking" would improve my ability to lasso images in photoshop, well not yet anyway. My old Logitech roller seemed to get "stuck" at the most critical moments, the necessary nudge would then send it scooting across the picture. This Iogear Laser is so smooth that the problem is just the opposite. With zero resistance this mouse seems to move by itself at the most critical moments. I think the problem could be solved with a better mouse control panel. There is simply not enough sensitivity adjustment in the Windoze mouse control to get it right. At the slowest setting it is too sluggish, but one notch up and it becomes too touchy. The Logitech mouse driver allows more fine tuning of the mouse sensitivy and includes an accelerator adjustment. The potential is there for a great product, if Iogear had included an improved mouse driver instead of relying on the standard Windoze driver, this mouse would rate a perfect 5.

Great hardware, Poor software,
This review is from: IOGEAR GME521 5-Button USB Laser Mouse (Personal Computers)
This mouse seems very durable and has good ergonomics. The wheel button has a little too much resistance, but maybe it'll loosen up after a while. The tracking is great. Hardware-wise, this mouse gets 5 stars.
The software (called "Office Program Selector") is poor. You can't customize what any of the buttons do. The side buttons are for the back and forward functions in your browser. I would like to be able to assign them to other functions (which you could do with Microsoft mouse devices 5 years ago), but the software won't let me. The middle button opens up a menu that allows you to launch eight programs (Word, Excel, IE, Outlook, etc.) with one click. The problem is, you can't customize the programs that are listed. So, the software gets 1/5 stars, and is now uninstalled on my machine. Hopefully, Iogear will release a new version of their software that fixes these problems. Until then, this mouse gets a thumbs down.

Installation was very easy. But I had later troubles with this unit. But after reinstalling the driver it was ok. Performace is average.

Iogear Laser Terrible,

The Iogear Laser mice (mouses) are terrible. I bought this mouse (GME521) and the travel desktop mouse and the sensitivty & reaction of both mice are the worst I've ever seen. Good luck trying to point the cursor where you want it to go. The cursor dances across the screen even when I'm not touching the mouse. I've tried them on 2 different desktops and a laptop computer. It's a disgrace!

1600 dpi resolution laser
Works well with KVM switches unlike some light up feature laden mice. Cheaper then Logitech, with higher resolution. Liked it so much I bought two of em!

I bought 2 and one worked for about 2 months before needing replacement. Its the most uncomfortable mouse Iv'e ever used I wish the other one would break too. I have big hands and this mouse still needs to be smaller. I feel like i have to strech my fingers to click and then it hurts my palm. I found a mouse that is much more comfortable and easy to use here is the link Microsoft Intellimouse Optical Mouse

Good mouse, short life,

I really liked my Iogear mouse while it was alive. However, in less than a year, it stopped working, and I replaced it with a MS wireless mouse. I really didn't care for the hypersensitivity, but I did like the quick launch feature on this mouse. No matter what, though, I'll take reliability over gadgets every time.

UPDATE: Original review follows.
Iogear helped me through the issue by getting me a replacement. They were quick about it, and sincerely wanted to help. The new mouse works great. The best mouse I've ever used. I'm changing my review from 1-star to 5-stars. My Original Review: This must be some sort of joke - to release this mouse for sale. It looks nice, and the hot-link buttons function well. As a pointing tool, though, it is utterly useless. It is so sensitive that the slighest move sends your pointer to the corner of the screen. At first I thought that maybe I needed to adjust to the new mouse, or better yet, perhaps adjust the sensitivity. Option 1: You cannot adjust the sensitivity. On to option 2... Option 2: Maybe it's just me? Unfortunately not. When the mouse sits, untouched, on my desk, the pointer is slowly drifting across my monitor screen. Sometimes when I try to use it to select something, it is impossible. I junked this POS, and went back to my older Dell/Logitech mouse.

The mouse is tough to control,

True to its name it has high sensitivity. Too much that on a very smooth surface this mouse becomes live.Start moving in all directions.
On my couch the mouse is dead. If the surface is smooth the mouse laser is too sensitive. But when the surface is soft or rough the mouse gets stuck. The paws/foot of the mouse is sticky. Not sure if this is a defective but really hate this mouse.... I am returning this product. Even at the slowest speed it is difficult to click a checkbox on the screen. |
