IOGEAR's GSR202 smart card is a small portable credit-card shaped pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits or IC chips which can process data. The combination of the small size and IC make them a valuable tool for security, data storage, and other special applications. The use of Smart Cards can improve user security by combining something a user has (the smart card) with something only the user should know (a PIN) this provides two factor security that is more secure than passwords alone. The traditional credit card uses a magnetic-strip which stores a very small amount of information and has no processing capability of its own. Smart Cards are the next generation of secure and user friendly identification, authentication & data storage solution. The IOGEAR USB Smart Card Reader uses a contact system where the card must be swiped through the card reader; this type of reader is less prone to misalignment and eliminates the possibility of being misread.

I have been driving to the NOSC for the longest because I have not been able to find a CAC reader that works with my MAC. This one works. FINALLY!!
All I had to do was plug it into the USB port and slide my ID in. I accessed NKO, DTS, and my Navy.mil email account all with this reader.
There was nothing to download for the MAC. I think you have to download certificates for PC though.
So for all you frustrated MAC users, this is your reader ;0)

I've read reviews about other smart card readers needing middleware software so I was expecting something similar with this. I've got OSX 10.6.8 and this read my CAC immediately after plugging it in, no additional software needed.

Cool product, needed a lot of attention for Lion
It reads my military cac, but I had to downgrade the card reader's firmware with Windows. I then had to install a bunch of certificates. Read more

Great, works perfectly.

Excellent CAC Reader!
This CAC reader works wonderfully with Windows 7. Just plug in and windows updater installs drivers for it automatically. No need to download any home use software. Read more
