4.0 out of 5 stars Very effective and powerful... so use it with care
Having used many utility programs (System Works, System Suite, etc..), I can honestly compare them with System Mechanic.

Pros:
1. It is very effective IF used properly. For beginners use "Maintanence Wizard" this will effectively and safely optimize and clean your OS.
2. "Netbooster" actually DOES make your internet connection faster! I mean Wopping fast, if...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the Money
My experience has not been good using this product. My internet connection (cable) actually ran slower after I adjusted the settings with System Mechanic 3. Some of the graphics on the websites also began to not load.

The File Removal feature only found 8 mg. of temporary files to delete, out of a total of 6 gigs.... not much of an improvement. The Registry...

I mean Wopping fast, if you have DSL or a cable modem. Even if you have 56K modem, you will consistently see an improvement.
3. Gives you much control over your computer, you can customize your Windows according to your preference quickly.

Cons:
1. If you use System Mechanic manually (i.e., without using "Maintenance Wizard") to fix things, be very careful. You must know what you are doing, or else you might destablize your computer. I recommend "Maintenance Wizard" for safe and effective optimization.
2. No defragment program.

Sum:
Very powerful tool. It really optimized my computer (Win 2000, XP). More than SystemWorks or System Suite.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the easiest, most powerful utility packages, ever!, November 7, 2002
This review is from: System Mechanic 3 (CD-ROM)
I love using System Mechanic. It's fast, easy to use, and handles a wide variety of routine clean up and maintenance tasks. I've used other utilities that did pretty much the same thing, but they weren't as easy to use and nowhere near as comprehensive. In addition to the file system tools that allow you to remove junk and obsolete files, clean the registry, and fix broken shortcuts, you can also customize your windows settings, optimize your network connection, and much more!
It's the swiss army wrench of utilities!

The Registry adjustment was equally disappointing, as my computer did not run faster after SM3 adjustments. Only because SM3 did find 8 mg. of files to delete, I gave it a rating of 2 stars.

The program didn't do any harm to my system, but it did not live up to the praise other reviewers gave it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable, Powerful Utility, March 1, 2003

System Mechanic takes care of a number of Windows problems, both large and small. The file cleanup function alone is worth the price. Gets rid of all sorts of Windows trash files at the click of a button. The startup manager will let you adjust what comes up when you start windows quickly and easily. Read the help files and check for updates frequently.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great utility!, November 8, 2002

This review is from: System Mechanic 3 (CD-ROM)
At first sight this appeared to be a little intimidating, but once I read the Help files (which were very comprehensive and easy to follow) I realized even I could use this program. System Mechanic cleaned out a ton of space on my hard drive, and my computer is running so much faster now. The customer service at iolo is also FANTASTIC. I called them up because I had a question and the girl I spoke with was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. I'd recommend System Mechanic to anybody looking for an AWESOME utility!

1.0 out of 5 stars System Mechanic, September 7, 2003

This is bad software! I lost most all of my programs and files using this trash on my DeskPro running Windows 98. I had run it several times before; however, the last time it ran uncontrolled until I noticed a runaway situation. By the time I hit cancel, which did not work, it had wiped out about 80% of my programs and files. Avoid this trash product!

I am very impressed with System Mechanic. It's so intuitive and easy to use that I didn't need to read the help files at all.

I find the "Privacy" feature most helpful - it deletes the browser cache, recently viewed history etc with one click. Also, the industrial strength deletion feature is great. I have been looking for this for a while.

Another useful feature is the ability to control the programs that start up when the OS loads - a lot of programs tend to do that these days, and it is annoying.

All in all, well worth the money.

I have Windows ME and using this product has caused constant problems on my system. Functions you take for granted on your computer wil start to disappear! I only bought it because Amazon was practically giving it away with a rebate, now I see why. This mechanic is bad news!

5.0 out of 5 stars works fine, August 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Upfront this will not work miracles, so it that is what you need the buy a new laptop.

However if you want something to maintain you system this is a good choice. I'm a tech head and so for me it is a quick and easy way to keep my systems running well. The things I used to do manually it takes care of quick and easy. Like a car mechanic, your Carola will still be a Carola but he will keep it running correctly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some useful features..., April 26, 2003

The internet optimization feature was helpful, as was the registry tool, but most other settings aren't that much of a help. I consider myself a power user (I'm a programmer), and there are much better tools than this one...

No harm was done when using it and it's working ok, that's why I'm giving 4 stars. If only the authors included more functionality, it'd have the potential for being a great utility.
