I thought long and hard about a portable battery powered PA system. I am a DJ, but I can't always bring my big PA. Plus I like to have impromptu music all sorts of places.

I debated about this or the Tailgater, and ultimately I picked this because I wanted it to get loud. It certainly gets plenty loud, but not much bass.

The battery life is friggin sweet. I don't know how long because I am always done with it well before the battery runs out, but I don't doubt that it gets every minute of the 12 hours they claim.

Also it seems to be very rugged. I know Ion isn't known for top of the line audio gear, but for under 200 bucks, this thing is awesome. In any case, if you want a big loud unit get this one. If you want something more portable, get the tailgater. Link: ION Audio IPA17 TAILGATER AM/FM I am thinking of getting the tailgater too, just to have something that I can always have with me.

- Gets as loud as you would expect.
- Good sound.
- Ipod dock. I don't have an Ipod, so I haven't tested this feature.
- AM/FM radio. This is cool for tailgating, you can listen to the game.
- Two Mic inputs, and a stereo input. You can listen to all the sources at the same time, everything has independent volume controls.
- Long battery life. They say 12 hours. I believe them.
- Wheels, carrying handles and a retractable pull handle, like a suitcase.
- Seems pretty rugged, metal grill and reinforced corners.

- No audio output. The previous generation of this product had an output, so you could connect two or more of them together for more sound.

Purchased on sale at Sams Club. Included microphone fails to drive unit to acceptable output volume. Substituting another microphone did not resolve the issue. Added a Nady MM-14FX Mini Line Mixer and got acceptable output levels similar to those produced by the built-in AM/FM tuner.

Note that this updated unit has only one mic level control rather than one for each channel. It also lacks the Line Out feature that enabled linking multiple units.

For convenience, I also added an Audio Technica ATR288W VHF Battery-Powered TwinMic Microphone System, which works well in my application even though it's an inexpensive ($120) VHF unit, since I don't require much range between the transmitter and receiver.

This unit has small wheels and I've seen owners drive their units at breakneck speed over bumpy sidewalks and even curbs, causing who knows what sort of stress/damage. No electronic device is designed to withstand such abuse. Possibly some of the complaints about reliability stem from this practice. I suggest giving the unit a break by getting a separate cart with wheels 3-4 inches in diameter.

All in all, good value. In retrospect, I might have preferred spending a few more dollars ($220) for the Samson XP40IW, which seems to have more power and to work well without the addition of third-party accessories. That unit is also available with a wireless mic ($298), though only a handheld not a lavalier/headset as required by my application.

I was given the Block Rocker as a Christmas gift by my husband. It was purchased in late November and we would run it down and recharge it once a month as suggested. It was used (other than just draining it and recharging it) only 4 times. On the fourth time in June, all the lights worked, it appeared charged, tuner seemed to work, my iPhone thought it was working, but the speakers didn't work. No sound whatsoever. It was almost like there was no connection to the speakers.

I had read the reviews about the battery not working or failing within the first year and decided it was a product we still wanted assuming we could replace the battery as some have written. Unfortunately, after only a few months of use, it was the speakers that died. We contacted Ion and they told us we could get it repaired at one of there authorized repair shops (which would be great if we lived next to one of their 3 locations in the continental US). We emailed back and explained that it was a new unit and within seconds got back the email that said 90 day warranty only and there was nothing they could do.

So, purchase at your own risk. Seems to be a good enough product to last 90 days, but it won't make it until its first birthday. If you plan on buying one every 6 months to a year, it is great. If you are expecting something better, go elsewhere.

This worked fine for a few months, and then all of a sudden, the battery stopped charging. When I would plug it into the wall, the green charge light would come on for 30 seconds and then turn off. The battery is dead, and the pitiful 90-day warranty has already expired.

Lots of other reviews mention this same exact problem. Don't waste your money on this.

Like another reviewer here, I received this item as a Christmas gift in December 2011 and used it every week indoors to teach dance classes, using the iPod dock. I always used it plugged in and only used it on battery life once for a show. In May 2012, it started malfunctioning. It would stop mid-song and I'd have to start the song over again to get sound for a couple weeks. I thought there was a problem with the song on the iPod, so I disregarded it. Then the block rocker stopped working entirely. Lights were on, it was plugged in, but there was no sound coming from the speakers. I tried again the following week and it came back to life, but during the practice, the music skipped terribly to the point it was unrecognizable and then it stopped working entirely again. I checked the iPod and it works on other docking stations perfectly, so I know it's not the iPod. I called Ion Audio's tech support and waited on hold for 30 minutes (ridiculous wait time!) only to have the unsympathetic tech support rep tell me "Sorry, 90 day warranty. We can't help you." The tech support rep explained they have 3 repair centers (CA, TX, and NJ) and he gave me the closest number. I called and the repair center rep explained that I would end up spending more money to repair the thing than it'd cost to just buy a new one, as their repair rates are $70/hr and I'd have to pay shipping. Wow. I am VERY disappointed.

As other reviewers have stated, the volume was great but the bass was lacking. I was happy with it otherwise, until it stopped working. I never once dropped it and was very careful when transporting it to avoid breaking anything. I suspect an electrical short in the iPod dock but am unable to confirm. The 90 day warranty is useless.
