4.0 out of 5 stars Useful if you are deploying IPv6 on a large network, especially the government, June 26, 2008
This review is from: IPv6 Mandates: Choosing a Transition Strategy, Preparing Transition Plans, and Executing the Migration of a Network to IPv6 (Hardcover)
Karl has been studying IPv6 for a number of years from unique viewpoints inside a number of corporate and government networks. He's made pioneer explorations of IPv6 network deployments and growth. He has also had extensive experience inside government networks and organizations.

In this book he offers advice about managing the coming IPv6 deployment and the issues in particular in a large network. His humorous style makes the reading easy, and it is easy to skip around the book to find parts of particular interest.

This book is not an intro to IPv6 (which is available in many places), though it contains introductory material, of course. It is for the network manager, particularly the government network manager, dealing with the mandates to roll this "new" technology out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great source of knowdge and experience, January 10, 2009

This review is from: IPv6 Mandates: Choosing a Transition Strategy, Preparing Transition Plans, and Executing the Migration of a Network to IPv6 (Hardcover)
Started reading the book IPv6 mandates in December, after first chapters, I couldn't stop reading it. I did use every possible time to continue reading. I was looking for IPv6 facts and rationale to be used when discussing with decision makers, information about the reason for deployment of IPv6 beside the technical advances. I found it as a great source of information, knowledge and know how, a well structured, easy to understand book.

The book is not only focused on the technical matters. Karl Sill, the writer is modestly explaining his long professional experiences. This book is really a gold mine for individuals who currently are or in future will be involved in the IPv6 transition either as catalyst, project manager, Network architecture, even CIO:s should read this book.

A big thanks to Karl who generously shares his unique and global experiences from involvement in different IPv6 projects with the interested readers. Both advantages and draw backs (areas you should seriously making analysis) are discussed, great information about references (where to find more detailed information).

At last but least, the book gives you lots of very useful knowledge such as high level understanding of the technology, hints on IPv6 strategy, planning the deployment, during the deployment phase and even about the what you may need to cover after the deployment. In other words go for it, buy it or borrow from the library or from your friend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, September 29, 2008

This review is from: IPv6 Mandates: Choosing a Transition Strategy, Preparing Transition Plans, and Executing the Migration of a Network to IPv6 (Hardcover)
I'm a software developer likely to be writing some new software soon that will need to be IPv6-savvy. So I've been picking up many books to learn more, and this book was one of them.

Altho I don't expect I'd ever be responsible for an IPv4->6 transition (which is the main focus here), this is exactly the book I would want to find. It provides a lot of practical details on all the steps of this complex project, from planning, pilots, risks, to execution and support thereafter, is very well structured, and well written. It provides a lot of information, both on the technical aspects, and on the planning and logistics of such a transition (with a nice balance of technical and non-technical aspects). I learned a lot from it.

The author obviously knows his subject!
